Story
Many of us unconsciously pick up ambitions from our parents, celebrities, or the imaginary "they" we’re trying to impress. We crank hard trying to meet the "right" goals instead of the ones that match the shape of our heart. It’s Achievement Autopilot…and it’ll burn you out. Knowing how you actually want to feel is the most potent form of clarity that you can have. Generating those feelings is the most powerfully creative thing you can do.

Ask and It Is Given is certainly a book about our ''asking'' being answered by all-that-is. But it's primarily about how whatever we're asking for is being given to us - and it's also the first book to ever, in such clear terminology, give us the simple practical formula for how to ask for, and then how to receive, whatever we want to be, do, or have. Decades ago, while searching for plausible answers to my never-ending quest to know what ''it'' is all about, I discovered the word ineffable (meaning ''incapable of being expressed in words'').

The Work is simply four questions that, when applied to a specific problem, enable you to see what is troubling you in an entirely different light. As Katie says, "It's not the problem that causes our suffering; it's our thinking about the problem." Contrary to popular belief, trying to let go of a painful thought never works; instead, once we have done The Work, the thought lets go of us. At that point we can truly love what is, just as it is.

Shetty grew up in a family where you could become one of three things - a doctor, a lawyer, or a failure. His family was convinced he had chosen option three: Instead of attending his college graduation ceremony, he headed to India to become a monk, to meditate every day for four to eight hours, and devote his life to helping others. After three years, one of his teachers told him that he would have more impact on the world if he left the monk’s path to share his experience and wisdom with others.

Publisher's Summary
How do you feel about setting goals?
I’ve heard people say they feel energized, depressed, confused, terrified, pumped, ambivalent, lost...or all of the above. Here’s what I’ve realized: Our relationship to success is inside-out. When we make our New Year’s resolutions, bucket lists, big plans, or weekly to-dos, we’re hoping that when we "arrive" we’ll be fulfilled. Our hearts will swell as we cross the finish line, and then we can finally relax and savor our happiness. Except more often than not, that doesn’t happen. Even when we meet our objectives, we wonder if we aimed too low, or took too long, or if we could have done it better. And when we fall short, we come down on ourselves like a ton of bricks. So we make the next goal, hoping it’ll give us everything the last one didn’t.
It’s a self-defeating cycle that’s burning us out. How do we change it?
Here’s the whole cosmic, life-liberating revelation:
You’re not actually chasing the goal. You’re chasing the feeling that you hope attaining the goal will give you.
Every craving, aspiration, or goal you have - from what you eat, wear, and own, to all the things you want to create or do - is driven by a desire to feel a certain way. That’s it. And that’s where the Desire Map process starts. In The Desire Map Experience, I’ll share a process that you’ll use to transform the way you relate to every aspect of your life. It’s not about learning a new time-budgeting method, filling out a questionnaire, or making another list to stick on your fridge. Instead, you’ll get crystal clear about how you want to feel about everything you do. The Desire Map is holistic life planning. Here’s how it works:
- We’ll uncover your core desired feelings - they’ll be your new North Star for living a soul-centered life
- You’ll learn how to identify expectations you’ve picked up from your parents, the Joneses, the media, or the imaginary "they" you’re always trying to impress
- We’ll use guided reflections to go deep into what your soul is trying to tell you through your core desired feelings
- I’ll show you how to tune into critical signals from your instincts, your body, and the people around you
- We’ll apply Desire Mapping to all the major areas of your life - livelihood & lifestyle, body & wellness, creativity & learning, relationships & society, and essence & spirituality
- You’ll learn how to create practical plans with daily, weekly, and monthly actions that will bring more and more of your core desired feelings into your life
- I’ll be sharing poetry, stories, and inspirational truths to help you stay in touch with the sweetness of life
You’ll make this process your own. It’s not a one-size-fits-all deal. You’ll create your Desire Map in the way that lets your soul speak loud and clear in every day of your life.
Feeling good along the way to your goals doesn’t mean you won’t need to work your ass off - but when you do, you’ll do the work joyously. You’ll be creating goals that are life-affirming, nourishing, practical, forgiving, and true to who you are.

Yellow brick road to the home of our own Desire.
I have been following Danielle LaPorte online for years. I have heard her speak in person, and been wowed. I have been the blessed recipient of three Pay What You Can days, with The Firestarter Sessions (which I then also bought as an audiobook), Your Big Beautiful Book Plan, and The Desire Map.
Turns out, I don't really like to read books on my computer. I prefer good, old fashioned paper. And so when the Desire Map was released in December of 2013, I ordered a paper copy for myself immediately, and because I was so enchanted with the program (and wanted to give back for all the lovely PWYC day gifts), I ordered a paper copy to give to a friend. Then the Day Planner for myself. Then the e-book version for a friend. Then the audiobook versions of the Desire Map Experience and Desire Map Daily from Audible, because I love audiobooks. Then 5 more planners to give away to friends. And 6 workbooks to use and give away to friends. Love, love, everywhere.
THE WHOLE PREMISE OF THE DESIRE MAP IS CRITICAL INFORMATION FOR THE SELF-AWARE.
Let me say it again: The Desire Map is critical information for the self-aware, and for those wishing to become more self-aware. I devoured the book in about 3 days, and then took about a week to feel my way through the workbook. And it's a complete game changer. A total 180 transformation.
1. How do you want to feel?
2. Set goals that will make you feel that way, through every part of the process.
3. End of story. (Sort of.)
Simple. Beautiful. Magnificent. Transformative. Danielle has tapped into something that has been spewed, yet in actuality, missed by the multitudes in all but lip service: it's all about the journey, not the destination. (OK, it's a little bit about the destination…but only if the journey feels the way the destination should feel.)
The Day Planner fits in so beautifully with the whole system of Desire Mapping. I now have someplace to put my to-do lists…and they no longer feel burdensome. They feel energized. My to-do lists are generated first and foremost from my Core Desired Feelings, and then from my year’s intentions and goals. So my monthly intentions, my weekly goals, and my daily to-do lists – they make me purely vibrate with a Soul connection I didn’t realize was possible.
Danielle has given voice(and such a beautiful, honest, Soul-infused voice it is) to a concept that has whispered to my Soul forever: I am more, there is a better way, this can all be deeper. She has painted the yellow brick road that will guide us each to the home of our own Desire. She is the Wizard, showing us that we each wear our own ruby slippers.

Revolutionary approach to goals and joy!
What made the experience of listening to The Desire Map Experience the most enjoyable?
Danielle has a calming, serene voice that is a pleasure to listen to. It almost feels like she is your friend, talking to you about this amazing approach, how you can flip goals inside out and learn to feel joyful, inspired, energized - whatever your Core Desired Feelings are.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved everything about this book from Danielle's authentic self to the enthusiasm to how I feel after I have been listening. Some books lull me, this energized and invigorated me.
Have you listened to any of Danielle LaPorte’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, I have listened to The Desire Map Daily, which is similar but a much more abbreviated version of the work. The Desire Map was all about immersing myself in my CDFs and taking a look at not only what, but how, for the next year.
What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?
The whole book is about the new idea to focus on Core Desired Feelings, rather than the "things" you want to achieve. Mind blowing inspiration!
Any additional comments?
I'm a Mapper for life. Although a positive person, The Desire Map has already changed me and my approach to life. I can't thank Danielle enough.

Middle 2 hrs is life-changing
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Many cons but a few important pros (rendering it 'worth it'). Her voice - the odd Candanian accent, the slow, pretentious, '90s-sexy' voice is a huge turn-off. It just doesn't sound authentic - as if she is a second-rate actor playing a part. To get past this - I played it at 1.5x - making the voice higher, faster, and less sexy. Then the music.... it is annoying and pops in often - quite humorous, it's so dorky and stupid. The first three chapters are a waste, filler material. zzzzz... The 4 & 5th chapter is where it's at. You are being asked a series of questions to find out your heart's desire. This is what makes it all worthwhile. About 2 hrs worth of material, if you play it at 1.5x, it's less. But whatever - it's a workbook in audio format. If it was just sold as these two chapters then it would be like $6.95 for audible members so hence why they didn't - probably. But even as a credit, if you're at the place in your life where you want to manifest it real, you could really benefit. From it, I had a REAL breakthrough. Just, WOW. The final chapter centers upon how to get to where you want to go now that you know your core desire feelings. It's basically the same questions being asked again and again and again in various aspects of your life... so 5 mins of it is useful.
Any additional comments?
I was searching for a workbook to help me with manifesting and it's here.

It's time for me to stop buying books like this.
Would you try another book from Danielle LaPorte and/or Danielle LaPorte?
No.
What was most disappointing about Danielle LaPorte’s story?
I thought this was a book about goal setting! There is so much filler that sounds like an unorganized mix of regurgitated ideas from Esther Hicks, Oriah Mountain Dreamer and The Secret. I hate to be this person because I was so excited about this book. I was really hoping to find some good advice about honing in on your life purpose and setting goals that authenticate your life. The premise of this book is good, but it could have been written into 2 short chapters that are concise and helpful. This is also disappointing because this is the 2nd book I've bought this spring about life purpose and goals only to have found fluff inside instead. Also, Danielle doesn't sound authentic narrating it, rather, it sounds like she is trying to sound wise, which for me, is a huge turn off. If someone who writes a book about living an authentic life has to put on a wise woman front to sell her words, well, it's time to stop buying books like this.

Love the content, did not love the performance
Would you listen to The Desire Map Experience again? Why?
Only if i were able to fast forward through the irritating music that plays every so often.
What aspect of Danielle LaPorte’s performance would you have changed?
I would take out that awful music. I would also like it if she uses regular pronunciation of words. I got used to it after a while, but at first it was very distracting.
What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?
Starting with core desired feelings, not the actual items on the to-do list. It really is great content.
Any additional comments?
Wish I had a workbook that coincided with this!

It will know your (life) socks off!
Where does The Desire Map Experience rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Best Audio Book so far (with Fire Starter Sessions)
What did you like best about this story?
Danielle Laporte's a soul-full human being that shares a formula for living a better, happier life and to be better person in this world. It will rock your world, like it did mine.
Have you listened to any of Danielle LaPorte’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes! I love her, it's like. she's someone I know well because she has spent so many hours with me :). I'd say her performance is even better on Desire Map, but it's a really fine difference. She's just awesome.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Both, many times. I read this book in a very intense time of my life so it was super useful beause it helped me dive deeper into my feelings and desires.
Any additional comments?
Amazing book, it will change your life

Didnt like it
I did not enjoy this book, in fact I couldn't wait to finish it just to be able to read something else. It seem like a copy wanna be version of Big Magic which I love. Too many questions on how you would feel or how you currently feel, who cares. I didnt see the point or sense in asking it over 100 times. Just my opinion

Made me feel happy but put off by author's dishonesty
This is a good book and it helps you clarify your goals and it does raise happiness levels, if you like the law of attraction. But the author did put me off the book slightly and I started to dislike her when she tried to distance her method from the law of attraction and make out her method is new and unique. It is not. The law of attraction is not and has never been about envisioning 'things'. It has always been about feeling the emotion you get from having things or circumstances that you want. This book is good and a nice LOA refresher with some nice techniques. I'd have enjoyed it a lot more if the author had not felt such scarcity that she had to lie and make out she'd thought up something new. Do read this. It's well worth a listen, but skip over the bits where she compares it with LOA.

Thought provoking
The narrators voice is very soothing and the material is thought provoking and then there is loud jarring music in between the sections which is unnecessary and spoils the serenity of the experience

game changer; life is fuller now
buzzing and overflowing with new intentions or "goals with soul". beautifully poetic, read in a mesmerizing, lyrical tone, put simply, this book is outstanding.
loved every part. I listened to it entirely in less than a week and have two journals full of emotions I never even knew existed within.
please, if you want to live a life more present, more guided, more abundant....then purchase this little piece of magic.
inspirational words woven to make a soul overflowing with hope, positivity and gratitude.
love this author.

Inspirational
The process to reach your desired core feelings described in the book is very long (there are hundreds of questions), but it was quite satisfactory to finish. Towards the end I expected more concrete steps to turn the desire into reality, but still it's an inspirational read and and interesting heart to heart with self if you really go through it. I love Danielle's poetic and allenconpasing writing, and her voice and narration are perfect for this book.

Amazing book, if you are interested in finding out what lies behind your goals, why you set them, what drives you so this is for you. And the narrator's voice is like a music to your ears 😍 loved it!

Egotistical drivel
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Someone else writing it, who did not refer to herself as feeling like a loser, or bragging about her spiritual materialism.
Actually there is no way this book or any other book written by this writer could ever make a 4 or 5 star!
How could the performance have been better?
Different author!
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Desire Map Experience?
All of it

What an experience
This book will touch your soul - Danielle is amazing at getting deep deep deep into your desires. I had to pause my audiobook quite a few times - just to breathe and reflect. I have never been moved by a book like this before.
Her voice is so beautiful - almost like a meditation sensation - it will take you to a place that you really need to go so you can answer the questions.
The layers just start to fall away - I love this book so much and would really love everyone to have access to it.

Didn't enjoy the narration
I found the author/narrator hard to listen to. She spoke very slowly with long pauses in unusual places as if she was only just writing the book and coming up with the ideas. Tendency to draw out words for emphasis which interrupted the flow for me. Not my cup of tea but only because I couldn't focus on the content for the issues I had with the narration. Did not finish this audiobook although I tried on several occasions.

Should be read not listened too.
The idea of the book is good but should be read not listened too. The book is too slow and the voice so numbing I found it hard not to get frustrated with all the long pauses between individual sentences. I wanted to punch someone. It's a workbook rather than than a story.

Very helpful in identifying goals.
If you're a bit unfocused and not great at goal setting this book is great. Helped me to separate the wheat from the chaff so to speak when deciding what to focus on. Danielle's voice is sexy and breathy which I found a little distracting. I forced myself to be open minded and I'm glad I did.

Life changing
I couldn't recommend this book more highly. Danielle is a light in this world, helping people navigate their lives by what truly matters! Helped me immensely a few years ago, I will be forever grateful for it. I even flew to Australia to see her speak (from NZ), where she signed my book, such a special woman!
