Publisher's summary

Omaha, 1905: During the gilded age, when women live subjugated to men, 18-year-old Bridget prides herself on having earned acceptance to medical school.

When her father is murdered, a crime that does not interest the law because he was half Native American, she risks her plans to become a doctor, determined to avenge his murder.

Bridget's quest thrusts her into a world of seedy men and glitzy women, in one of Omaha's most opulent brothels. There, she finds herself the prey rather than the hunter. If she is to survive, she must keep the reclusive madam's shocking secrets, learn to trust her heart's yearning for the man who befriends her, and embrace her complicated alliance with a community of notorious women considered society's lowest.

Historical and engaging

Takes me back in time yo these ‘good ole days’. Definitely not good for all. Nicely follows the previous story.

Narration very disappointing

Both the first book and this book are great stories. Having listened to the first book on audio, listening to the narration of this book was so disappointing. The narrator does no accents, and the fact that the main character has an Irish accent, makes it hard to keep in mind. Also, the voice for the main character sounds 13, and not 18 years old and lacks any animation in her speech. I almost stopped listening after the first 10 minutes, not convinced. But, having listened to the first book, I knew the story in the second book would be good.
