Publisher's Summary

Growing up in the shadows cast by two world wars, Annabelle has lived a mostly quiet, steady life in her small Pennsylvania town. Until the day new student Betty Glengarry walks into her class. Betty quickly reveals herself to be cruel and manipulative, and while her bullying seems isolated at first, things quickly escalate, and reclusive World War I veteran Toby becomes a target of her attacks. While others have always seen Toby's strangeness, Annabelle knows only kindness. She will soon need to find the courage to stand as a lone voice of justice as tensions mount.

Brilliantly crafted, Wolf Hollow is a haunting tale of America at a crossroads and a time when one girl's resilience and strength help to illuminate the darkest corners of our history.

What the Critics Say

"The honesty of Wolf Hollow will just about shred your heart, but Annabelle's courage and compassion will restore it to you, fuller than before. This book matters." (Sara Pennypacker, New York Times best-selling author of Pax)

"Trusting its readers implicitly with its moral complexity, Wolk's novel stuns." (Kirkus)

"The narrative is powerful, complex, and lifelike...a truly moving debut." (School Library Journal)

    "Not for middle grade"

This is a well-written book, but it's too dark for for upper-elementary or lower-middle readers. Reviews typically compare to To Kill a Mockingbird. Even that book is more of a high school read.

"A friend recommended this book to me and I was not disappointed."

I would recommend it to anyone.
Although it was a middle school level I found the story held my attention and had enough twists in it to make it a little exciting and kept my interest.

    "Beautiful, but not realistic"

I wanted to love this book. The story in and of itself has great meaning, is beautifully written, and is performed well- however I started to get frustrated with the practicality of the plot. I kept being reminded that the main character is only 11- which becomes increasingly harder to believe with all that unfolds. I suppose anything is possible, but this fact kept making me question the greater meaning of the book and had me frustrated with the scenarios. It seems almost too far fetched and extreme for what it's trying to teach, which disappointed me.

    "Deep listening experience"

Our family enjoyed this book immensely. I politely disagree with a previous reviewer who said this isn't appropriate for kids. This book tackles big topics of bullying, the emotional fall-out of war, the importance of kindness and of true morality, but it does so in a way that a 10 and 12 year old can comprehend. It is presented in a way that provides a good starting point for family discussion on these topics. There was a point where I was worried the book would go too far, but it did not. If your children are quite sensitive or easily upset, this may not be appropriate for them yet. But I really believe that most kids will listen without issue, and enjoy this story as much as we did. On another topic, I love that the narrator is an extremely brave girl!

    "A Touching Story"

I felt as if I were a bystander as I listened to this book. The narration was perfect and the story very well written. A young eleven year old girl,Annabelle, experiences things that will make her who she is as an adult. Don't miss this one.

    "Good story, Unsatisfying ending"

The story was extremely engaging and well crafted. While the ending was more true to life, I read for pleasure and would have been more satisfied with a "happier" ending where good is rewarded and evil is punished. But I guess it's good for my teenager to learn that this doesn't always/usually happen.

    "great book, very enjoyable."

I read this book with my son for his summer reading list, and really enjoyed it. The narration was well done and the book was both suspenseful and meaningful.

    "Refreshing and Honest Tale"

It's so rare to find a book that is so refreshingly innocent. It's a call back back to wholesome roots and a lifestyle of ethics and values that we have forgotten.
The heroine in the story is so endearing you can't help but love her and want to take away something of her integrity."
This book gives you a glimpse of what family life looked like when I was a child and in my parents day. Quiet thoughtful days before we had so many distractions and when our families were the only people that we tgcould turn in for solace and entertainment. This is a well written, feel good story with unexpected turns. If you like a good mystery you'll love how Annabel uses her wit and keen sense of intuition to solve the mysteries. The author gives you a deep sense of the inner strugglings that take place when we want to do what is consistent with our values.
