Publisher's Summary

Now that Dimple Shah has graduated, she's ready for a break from her family - especially from Mamma's inexplicable obsession with her finding the Ideal Indian Husband. Ugh. But Dimple knows that her mother must respect that she isn't interested in doing that right now - otherwise she wouldn't have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers, right?

Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic, so when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him - during which he'll have to woo her - he's totally onboard. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself. Although their parents hadn't planned suggesting the arrangement so soon, when their kids signed up for the same summer program, they figured why not?

    Any additional comments?

The fact that this book would have an HEA was never in dispute. It was just a matter of what the couple went through to get there. I loved how the"obstacles" were real and not just some miscommunication that pulled/kept them apart.

Dimple and Rishi get my vote as the cutest couple of the year. This is the first time in my history of reading fiction that I had hoped for an epilogue. Things were resolved quite satisfactorily but I would have loved a fast forward to what they were doing or their wedding or to how the parents felt about their matchmaking.

The narration Blew. Me. Away. The chapters were told in first person POV and I had to check often to confirm that this was a solo narration effort. It sounded like two people!!! Sneha Mathan just nailed it.

I loved this couple. I loved how they met. I loved how they made each other better. I got the feels.

"Takes me to when I was 18"

When I bought the book - I read loads of reviews claiming this book is cute, and there were lots of comments about the cultural side of things. I think those are the just backdrop items in the overall story. what I loved about this book was how it took me back to when I was 18, confused about life, unable to articulate my feelings, when heartbreaks felt raw and stung worse than I could imagine, about how I thought I understood the world and my place in it. What I truly enjoyed about this book was going back to that, and relating to that version of myself. And that is what I really enjoyed about this book, the way that it took me back to my thoughts and feelings when I was young and just leaving home for college. If you want to recapture that thought, then buy this book.

So sweet you have to brush your teeth afterwards. But I'm a sucker for young love. I would very much recommend this to any romantic.

    "Adorable! Excellent readers! "
Where does When Dimple Met Rishi rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I hate how Audible won't let me just copy and past my reviews from Goodreads. I know they ask these questions to help guide the review and make it useful, but I'm busy and tired. I already post reviews on Goodreads, 2 blogs, and often Amazon. To have to arrive at Audible and then have to change or modify my whole review to fit inside these questions drives me nuts. I try to share book reviews to help readers and authors, but that doesn't mean I want to spend all day writing the same review over and over again in different ways.

    So I'm not going to.

Here's what I thought of the book, irregardless of this annoying review structure and the question posted above:

This book was absolutely adorable. I read it straight through and didn’t regret a second. The audiobook, in particular, is excellent, with two fantastic narrators in Sneha Mathan and Vikas Adam. I would definitely recommend this to others.

The premise: Dimple’s parents allow her to go to a 6 week summer coding class the summer before college only because they want her to meet Rishi, her potential future husband. Needless to say, Dimple’s not very interested in marriage or looking pretty, when she could be coding.

There are a few things about this delightful book that I felt could have been even better (the pacing, particularly in the last half), which would have made me love it at 5 star power. Those of you who know I typically rate high might realize that a 4 can be a bit of a flat rating for me, but this is not a flat book.

For a book set in such a fascinating world (in my mind) as Insomnia Con, I would have loved to see some actual world building there. Basically there was almost none, outside of the basics of getting started. We didn’t even get to see the depths that participants went to in order to complete their apps (including Dimple and Rishi who spent more time dancing than coding), and there were tons of other students in the program who we never really got to meet or understand.

Some of the main side characters didn’t really seem like the types to attend such a long, intensive summer camp. They were more interested in their wealth and popularity than actual coding, so I’m slightly disappointed in the fact that Insomnia Con could have been the most exciting and fascinating world of intellect, diversity, and nerdery ever and… it just wasn’t. Instead, it was more of a romantic plot tool, and the majority of scenes weren’t even really about the summer camp or the project, both of which were more interesting to me than the characters going out for dinner over and over again.

So it lost a star for world building failures, and it should probably lose a second star, in all honesty for the last 1/3 of the book, which had major pacing issues and a few moments that made me reconsider if I actually knew and liked Dimple. I know they were there again for “plot” tools, but I hate seeing a character bring out a particularly bad, unflattering behavior/quality at the end of the book and then not really address or atone for it.

However, I did think this was a fun, fast, lighthearted read that made me smile. A lot. So it still gets 4 stars, even though I just overthought it so much I almost reduced a star. There’s still a lot of good here. There’s still a lot to enjoy in the different ways both Dimple and Rishi consider and react with their cultures, both as Indian-American and as Indian. I enjoyed the culture of this book in general and thought that was a real strong point. It showed the different ways people feel and react, when they’re born into one culture/place but raised mostly inside another.

Yes, that helped. Now I do feel it definitely deserves those 4 stars. Just realize that you have to enjoy it for the overall journey, rather than the plot and world building, which both are lacking, particularly as the story progress. I still think the interesting main characters will see you through to the end, so give it a go.

What about Sneha Mathan and Vikas Adam ’s performance did you like?

    FANTASTIC!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes

    "A fun listen for summer"

Such a great story! Original, light and funny! The voicing is a bit slow, so I had to listen at speed 1.3! Recommend this to everyone:)

    "Sweet and fun"

This was a delightful story- romantic and kind. Both narrators were wonderful. All characters were 3 dimensional and both families were loving and supportive. Dimple is a modern young woman, who knows what she wants to do with her life. Her struggle to follow her dream is nuanced and realistic. Rishi is equally nuanced and realistic, but he (like Dimple) discovers the path you always saw before you may just lead somewhere different... or, perhaps, may be wider than you first perceived it to be. A fun read/listen.
