Critic Reviews

"The Mortal Instruments series is a story world I love to live in. Beautiful." (Stephanie Meyer)
"The story's sensual flavor comes from the wealth of detail: demons with facial piercings, diners serving locusts and honey, pretty gay warlocks, and cameo appearances from other urban fantasies' characters....Lush and fun." (Kirkus Review)

Not all it's cracked up to be.

I don't LOVE this book like everyone else seems to... And that might be that I'm more sci-fi/dystopia than fantasy.

The fantasy world is brilliantly imagined and runs directly alongside real life Manhattan. I loved the descriptions of the city mingling flawlessly with the imagined landscape of the narrative.

I liked the introduction of some diversity with a gay character. I mostly think it was dealt with sensitively and it's one of the stories I'm must intrigued by.

The story is good, I only had a half gasp moment towards the end... Mostly because I couldn't believe that the author has committed to an awkward to resolve storyline, but I'm super glad she did.

My main issue is that I didn't end the book feeling like I knew the characters. I dont feel like they're my best friends, or people I have to have in my life (maybe Simon as he's adorable), but I don't care massively about the individuals...

Although I'm not passionately obsessed there are things that I'd like to see work out. So, yes, I am going to continue listening. It's fun and easy and fills a dull moment, but I didn't listen to it non-stop.

Good for teens

I enjoyed the book, but it was quite childish in parts. But the characters are only 15 so it's my own issue ha. Overall it was good though :)

Fabulous story well performed.

If you could sum up City of Bones in three words, what would they be?

Great characters gripping.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters and their development.

Which character – as performed by Ari Graynor – was your favourite?

Jase because of his layers.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Demons look out!

Any additional comments?

I am reading one of the authors other series and have found them easier to listen to rather than read.

A book for teenage girls only

If you are looking for a book akin to twilight this is it. For me I kept hoping that the lead character would be put out of my misery. This proves the danger of bogof one good book one truly stunning not.

Great story

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Terrible narration. Trying to use different voices to portray different characters just didn't work and ended up being confusing, didn't know which character was meant to be speaking some of the time. Some shrill moments which did not come across well on headphones!

Any additional comments?

A great young adult story, suitable for young at heart adults too! Will be working my way through the series.

Good young adult book!

What did you like best about this story?

While the themes in the story are quite familiar if you read a lot of vampire/demon young fiction, the alternate world described was very believable. I really enjoyed listening to this, if it was a book it would be a page turner.

Which character – as performed by Ari Graynor – was your favourite?

I found her portrayals very believable, especially Simon.
