Creative but hard to stay engaged in

This is the first book in the Hungry City Chronicles, there are four books in this series. I was really excited to read this book; I thought it was something I was going to absolutely love. It ended up being okay but wasn't as engaging as I had hoped.

I listened to this on audiobook and the narration was well done. Edwards does a great job with having distinct voices for each character and with portraying emotion. It’s a book I would recommend listening to if you like audiobooks.

Part of my issue with this book was all the jumping around between characters; this made it so I never really engaged with any of the characters that well. When I finally really started getting into the story it jumped somewhere else.

The idea of cities that eat each other for resources is incredibly creative but I had some trouble suspending my disbelief about how this all worked. This was just a concept that was hard for me to process and really envision.

The characters were all so-so for me. They were kind of interesting but not all that engaging.

Overall this was an okay read but I don't plan on continuing the series. I just wasn’t that engaged in the story or the characters. The idea behind this alternate world is interesting but hard to find believable. I’ll be seeking out other steampunk series to read in the future.

Only some small problems

Overall, I liked both the story and performance. My only real problems are that the reader struggles with the female voices and the antagonist's plan is bat-shit crazy.

welp

Fotm fantasy series that reads through like a young adult fiction. It is an interseting idea, and the world building was good. However, I found the main characters to be whiney and unlikable; yes, even Hestor.

Garbage

How interesting are cities on tracks you must be asking? What a weird but actually interesting idea you must be thinking if you are reading this review. What if I told you... this is the wrong book to answer that question? What if I told you that the only interesting aspect of this book is completely in the background and gets maybe 5-10 minutes reading time in vague detail? You would lose interest right? Well let me save you some time and money and say that none of those questions were hypothetical.

Action Adventure and Fast Paced

Its a fast paced, action, adventure book. The writing is good. The narration was good as well. The characters are likable. Makes you want to read the other books.

Not a horrible listen, but not great.

The story was ok. I ended up having no emotional connection with any of the main characters. I did eventually come to like some of the ancillary guildspersons.

Wonderful story! I loved all of it, and can't wait to hear the rest of the series. The reader was fun to listen to with all his voices too!

It’s was ok

The main idea I thought was creating but the overall story was mediocre. If this book was just the precursor to a more complex and creative universe it’s worth the read but I don’t know what the second book is about. But as a stand-alone if given the choice again I wouldn’t listen.

Well that was good.

My brother recommended this. Said it was one of the best stories on the planet. He should know. So I risked it for a biscuit and got a cakes worth. Also bought the job lot for me mams birthday. Fantastic story and the narration is second to none. In fact the narration is probably the best I have on Audible. Blimmin brilliant.

I do like Philip Reeve

Read this book a long time ago when I bought it for my son before the series was complete. Now that it is being made into a film I wanted to refresh my memory. This audio book is well done. There is good chacterisation in dialogue and varied enough between characters. Would definitely recommend it.

A different type of story

I decided to give this series a go after seeing the teaser trailer for the movie. From the trailer to what i have heard I can see there is possibly going to be some big changes from the book to the movie. The story is unique and is full of action and adventure a good listen or read.

Interesting story, mediocre delivery

Really enjoyed the story. Wanted to get through the book before the movie came out. (a novelty for me). The story is interesting. It's engaging. The characters have personality.
However the narrator, was not my favorite. He tries. I mean, it's not exactly Stephen Fry level. His depiction of the female characters, lacks enthusiam. And the accents are pretty bad.

Story was good, narration was ok

Story was interesting, and I liked how the narrator read it. The only thing was that the voices of the characters were hard to listen to; they didn't fit, and were spoken a lot more slowly than the rest of the story. I wanted to change the speed every time somebody spoke. Reading the book may have been more pleasant.

Preparing for the film! Worth every second!

If it wasn’t for the upcoming film I’d never have even thought about picking this book up but it’s now one of my favourites! Such a great and unique story, pristine detail and fun characters and such an amazing world to be introduced to I can’t wait to read the others! Thank you Philip Reeve for such an enjoyable book and thank you Barnaby Edwards for the incredible performance.

A Certain Modern Classic

The dystopian adventure continues with the wonderfully advanced and creative mind of Reeve. New and yet familiar characters enter the fray of anticipation in this hyperbolic socio-political commentary about the greed of man that manages to outlast annihilation. And at the centre of it all is the bonding of opposites baring the same scars in one way or another.

Compelling world and characters

The absolute strength of this novel is how effectively it depicts fantastical world's and situations.

The only issue I had was that I almost feel this book would be better read than listened to. The performance wasn't great.

Excellent performance, decent story

The setting of Mortal Engines is very absorbing and interesting, and there is a lot of action to enjoy. The plot itself is a fairly standard YA action-adventure, but is well worth listening to, especially due to Barnaby Edwards excellent narration and voicework.

read it before Jackson's film comes out

thinking about putting my house on tracks and having it eat the neighborhood. then I'll roam the suburban fields looking for fat two story homes with double garages. after I have the resources I can corner the market with electric houses on wheels sticking it to Elon musk and his puny Tesla cars!
