Publisher's Summary

In this debut novel and series starter, the last member of a murdered House searches for a missing nobleman, and uncovers clues about his own tortured past.

Rune Saint John, the last child of the fallen Sun Court, is hired to search for Lady Judgment's missing son, Addam, on New Atlantis, the island city where the Atlanteans moved after ordinary humans destroyed their original home.

With his companion and bodyguard, Brand, he questions Addam's relatives and business contacts through the highest ranks of the nobles of New Atlantis. But as they investigate, they uncover more than a missing man: a legendary creature connected to the secret of the massacre of Rune's Court. In looking for Addam, can Rune find the truth behind his family's death and the torments of his past?

Surprisingly different and chalk full of sass!

4.5 stars!

Book Content Warning: talk of past sexual assault.

This was surprisingly different and chalk full of sass! I had a lot of tropes lined up in my head for a story like this, and in steered clear of a lot of them.

The world and plot held my interest the whole time, and there wasn't any unneeded info dumping. I loved the characters and their relationships. They were all sassy, but in different ways.

I was sure this would be an mm romance between the mc and his bodyguard, but it wasn't and their friendship gave me warm and fuzzy feelings. They'll sass each other one minutes and hug the next...while sassing each other, I loved it.

Also, there was a good found family feel to it, with the all the characters which is one of my biggest weaknesses.

I eagerly await the next book.

This was such an amazing surprise!

I encourage everyone to take a chance and read this book! I didnt know what to think at first, since it was a new author, but Im so glad I got to experence this story.
The magic, characters, world, and plot were all great! I was a little confused by some of the magic and world details at first, however that didnt last long and the characters more than carried me through it.
The plot was great, and left me craving the next book. It seems like this is only the beging and I cant wait for more!!

I don’t know what to do??

This audiobook was so good. The world that was created was spectacular. I’m dying to know what happens next. I usually wait until the next book would be made into an audiobook to enjoy the story but idk I’m seriously considering seeing if the next book is out.
The narration was fabulous. Hurley made the characters come alive.
I will say, it was hard to hear about the sexual assault. That is my only warning to any one thinking of listening to this audiobook.

Holy shit.

I don’t know what I was expecting when I bought this book, but definitely not that. Easily, easily one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time. World-building was flawless. Characters were rich and complex and fascinating. The plot was incredibly engaging and the larger arch of the series integrated seamlessly. Josh Hurley’s reading brought the characters to life perfectly. 10/10, get this book.

Holy shit that was so good!!!

I’m going to level. I found this book because I was looking for happy gay stories. Gay media is full of tragic horrible stories, and I hate it. Then I found this. The sample made it sound weird. The reviews weren’t detailed so I wasn’t sure about it. I took a chance. This story if freaking awesome! Yes there is a side gay romance in the book. The main story though is of heroism defeating the bad guy who is doing ding messed up shit with his magic. This world is super awesome and I loved the mystery of who the bad guy was and the question of what really all going on behind the scenes. I can’t wait for the next one!!!

I am stunned

I truthfully didn't come to this expecting much, I just needed some background noise. But this is absolutely amazing. The story, the suspense, the world building!! Im so genuinely Grateful to have randomly come across this and greatly encourage everyone to give this a shot if you love fantasy! Its so well done yet not typical and childish! Its a genuine adult read full of mystery, sorrow, rage, fear, joy and perfectly cued comedic points! And the narrator truly did a wonderful job bringing the world and the characters to life! This is the first time im giving an audible perfect scores in all categories.

Loved the experience...

Thought provoking, action packed, utopian living with a touch of magic and mystery...loved reading about Lord Sun, his life, and the companion bond with Brand...the unfettering relationship with Lord Tower and the building of a love with Adam...the only reason that I did not give it a 5 star rating was I really wanted more between Rune and Adam...maybe in the next portion of the story...

Great new series!

Bought this book on a whim. Expected it to be a fluffy, over sexualized novel that I have come to expect from series that stray from the traditional boy meets girl universe. I was happy to discover it was none of those things. It may have touched on the subject but that’s about it/. The book is well written with great character development and plot. I can’t wait for the new book to be released.

Fantastic listen in both story and voice.

A fantastic example of a gay fantasy novel which does not completely revolve around the relationship aspect of the story. It builds characters which are not just important or interesting due to their sexual orientation or their relations. This is not to say that there are no meaningful relationships or interactions between characters with Rune, Addam and Brand's relationship not being a conventional rushed sexual relationship. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to the Hanged man with bated breath.

Good story that explores some dark themes.

I would hesitate to say this was an enjoyable story. The use of sexual assualt as a plot device mad me personally uncomfortable. However, The Last Sun was certainly interesting. I think the the story starts on shaky ground, with the first half not being all that good but it picks up in the later half.

The narration was good and the characters were intriguing. The relationships between the characters is at the core of the book, and on the whole they are well represented. There aren't any female characters at the forefront of this story, which may bother some people. The writer made the decision to write the book in first person, but does not reveal too much information at once and has left plenty of mystery for future additions to the series.

I am interested to see how the story develops in the sequel.

What a romp!

Absolutely brilliant! I bought the audio so no preconceived ideas or ‘voices’. Throughly enjoyed everything about this story and performance. I will definitely be buying book two. I am desperate to find out what happens next to our ‘Hero’ and his sidekick! Their interactions and deep love (platonic) make this book! The bond that these two share is incredible and as other characters are introduced, you get a real sense of who they are from their interactions, both lighthearted and sombre, with each other and others. The story is engaging, adventurous and complex ... a real epic in the making! Five stars well deserved!

Perfection

The story is brilliant and keeps you engaged from start to finish and I am very excited for the next book.

The narrator - I mean wow he nailed it beyond belief. He managed to give such perfect life to the characters and make some scenes cause me to laugh out loud and look weird in public.
Please use him if possible for the next book.

This is the best audible purchase I have made in my 2 years I think.

Surprisingly very good

The story was actually good, fast paced an full of action, but with enought moments to learn about the characters and connect.
The narration could have been better, sometimes it was hard to tell, which character is speaking, but other than that, I finished the book in one go and am looking forward to the next books in the series.

Unexpectedly excellent

Came across this book by happenstance, having never seen it mentioned under any recommended LGBT* book lists. Some o those lists have included some rather dire numbers in my eyes so I approached this warily. I was delighted in all the best ways. An interesting urban fantasy blend that has me hoping for more and a pleasant range of characters treated with sympathy. If nothing else I fell in love with seeing male characters in a variety of relationships (romantic and non) being allowed to have and express their feelings without shame. The friendship between Rune and his companion was particularly compelling for me and I'd like to see further exploration of how that potential power balance might effect them in the future. I will certainly be revisiting and recommending this one.
