Historical reminder of who we don't want to be

Great history recall to remind us all of the need for total human equality now and forever. Love the personal story line telling h ou w a person can change.

Awesome new series

I was Looking for a great series- so far I love this one. I have mixed feelings about the narrator though. I love her characterization of a few of the main characters but the rest make it hard to enjoy the story to its fullest potential. If it were my aunt reading out loud I could understand but these are professional actors seems that there are many to choose from so why be so lax?

Outstanding Historical Fiction

Not only does this fantastic book and performance accurately portray our US history in the events leading up to the Civil War. It also highlights how a lack of faith, hatred, bigotry, and division tore this country in two. Do we never learn the lessons we experienced throughout history? I look forward to listening to the next book in the series.

Story was so interesting and unique perspective

Great story and now I will order the next book in the series. I wasn't sure about the book after the first few chapters but after that I was hooked.

Good southern drama!

This book did meet my expectations. I love southern history. Will load the next book to continue the journey. I enjoyed the narrator. I don't like to compare them...just doesn't seem fair. Davina Porter could read the phone book and I'd enjoy it. I try very hard not to compare anyone to her. If you're interested in a good story with a high morale tone this is for you.

Not a waste of time

This was The first story that I read from this author. It was not as exciting as other civil war stories, but it certainly kept me listening.

Great listening

Great narrator! A novel that allowed you to explore and understand others points of view, not agree, but understand the hearts of others.

Excellent story and Character development

I am confounded by the negative reviews. I found this to be a riveting account of life in the Southern states in the year leading up to cession and civil war. The research conducted to write this book is obviously extensive as the author explored issues of states’ rights, slavery, the cultural and educational restrictions put on women and the struggles of, heart, mind, and soul of the people who had to come to terms with their beliefs regarding the religious justifications for one race owning another. The narration is EXCELLENT. It is incredible to me that one woman could voice multiple voices and never mix them up. It is impressive. It seems some readers have never lived in the South or had contact with people from the South. This is a perfect rendition of the Southern dialect both white and black, rich and poor, and educated and uneducated.
Some people have compared this book to Outlander. To me they are totally different. One is a fantasy romance novel with so many sex scenes I didn’t even finish the whole series, it was so ridiculous. This series concentrates on how real people in the North and the South had to come to terms with the upheaval and tragedy that was their lives and the beauty of this book is that the author coveys this through almost poetic prose and character development.

Storm clouds

I really enjoyed the book. I like how she developed Carrie as a young woman aware of the world around her and willing to find out why it is bothering her. She is a far cry from Scarlet, and I love Scarlet.
At first I thought the story was stilted, but now I am eager to begin the second in the series.
I would almost prefer a man reading because it seems more believable when a man reads a woman than visa versa-just my preference.
