Good Story. Okay narration.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend this book to a friend, as I would with all BJ novels. However, I would suggest that you read the book before listening to the audio book. I think you could get the wrong impression of how great a writer Ms BJ is if you only listen to this performance.

What didn’t you like about Shari Peele’s performance?

I usually love Shari Peele's narrations. In fact, I was excited to see that she was narrating this story. However, this was not one of her best performances. The meter was off, and it was very slow. It felt like it was dragging. Also her voices sounded pretty similar, especially the male characters. Her accents were also off. I have heard her do a really good Spanish inflected English accent in other audio books, but in this one it was just off at times. I love her narration of modern stories, but I didn't really care for her performance of this historical romance.

Good book but ...

It’s a really nice hook, but the narrator’s swallowing sounds get in the way a bit. I’ve listened to a lot of books and there has to be a way to swallow saliva more subtly. She’s a good narrator though, so it makes up for the little annoyance.

Shari Peele, AGAIN?!?!?!

Here we go with this awful narrator AGAIN!!! She sounds like she has a mouth full of spit. I couldn't even get through the first chapter. She must be doing this shit for free! Damn!!!

Awful Narration

I’m very particular about audio books and after I ran out of others to listen to, I decided to start on Beverly Jenkins’ historical novels. I’ve been reading them since I was a teenager and she is absolutely my favorite author. I love Mariah and Logan’s story and Alanza is by far one of my favorite characters.

My issue with this is totally the narrator. Why does Alanza sound like she had a stroke? It sounds as if the narrator has to think too hard on the accent. Spaniards speak fast so the accent completely throws me off. Maybe reading one of the southern accented books by BJ, Shari Peele would be better but this is honestly almost as bad as the narrator of Night Hawk. I almost don’t even want to finish listening.

Great

I really liked this book and would recommend this book. I wish this book was a movie or TV show. It had great sexual storylines and great storyline. Her mother treatment of her was crazy. I liked how she found love across the country. I can't wait to hear the other brothers and their mother's love life.

great story...issues with the narrator

this boot is one of my favorites. however, I cringed through most of the book because Shari Peele is yet another narrator who swallows...loudly...into the mic. it's disgusting and distracting.

Housekeeper was more than a match

I loved this story. The heroine and hero were perfect for each other.
Mariah left her home in search of independence and freedom. Logan has freedom and family but once he met the housekeeper Mariah, he learned that his life was still incomplete. They verbally sparred and vexed each other until they gave into their passion. These two were definitely stronger together. This story was entertaining with bits of history sprinkled in. The emphasis on family and hard work is a continual theme I’ve noticed in Beverly Jenkins novel.
The narrator was spot on and I can’t wait for book 2.
