Publisher's summary

Is love worth the loss of one's freedom and independence? This is what Mrs. Tavernor must decide in the new novel in the Westcott series from New York Times best-selling author Mary Balogh.

When Harry Westcott lost the title earl of Riverdale after the discovery of his father's bigamy, he shipped off to fight in the Napoleonic Wars, where he was near-fatally wounded. After a harrowing recovery, the once cheery, lighthearted boy has become a reclusive, somber man. Though Harry insists he enjoys the solitude, he does wonder sometimes if he is lonely.

Lydia Tavernor, recently widowed, dreams of taking a lover. Her marriage to Reverend Isaiah Tavernor was one of service and obedience, and she has secretly enjoyed her freedom since his death. She doesn't want to shackle herself to another man in marriage, but sometimes, she wonders if she is lonely.

Both are unwilling to face the truth until they find themselves alone together one night, and Lydia surprises even herself with a simple question: "Are you ever lonely?" Harry's answer leads them down a path neither could ever have imagined....

Everyone needs someone to cherish.

This one is one of my favorites in the series. I love the way it brings all the love stories of the siblings and their mother together. A true love story that brings it all together. I’m truly glad I found this author and Rosalyn Landor brings it every time. She truly brings the book to life.

Harry’s Happy Ending

So glad Harry’s story finally got written and he finds his happy ending with Lydia. It was well deserved. Throughput the series it was uncertain if Harry would make it home.
Not only does he but he plays matchmaker for his sister first thing.
Then he finds his own love
living right under his nose. Well done.

BEST story yet in the series!

I love this entire series and this was the best so far! I only listen to books narrated by Rosalyn Landor as well. She is the best narrator and truly understands each character. Thank you Mrs. Balogh for allowing Mrs. Landor to narrate. This book visited the entire family and reminded us of each previous romance. I wish the Bedwyns could meet the Wescotts!!

Another good Westcott love story

I have read, and now listened, to almost all of this series and enjoyed them all, including this one. It’s not my favorite, but I still enjoyed it and Rosalyn Landor, as always did an excellent job. I get into the story and the narration just fades away while still moving the story forward. 4.5 stars.

Harry finds love despite his family

Westcott novels always involve a family conference to solve some problem and this was no different, however the "problem" at hand was Harry's turning 30 without his own happily ever after. The family diligently works to celebrate the birthday and find Harry a match. As this is going on, Harry gets to know the widow in town fresh out of her mourning. She, of course, has her own set of challenges and difficulties that are made no better when Harry gets involved.
I happily listened to Mary Balogh's familiar style (thank you very much!) and enjoyed the way the relationship between these two grew. Then the family arrived and everything goes into never-ending chaos. Unfortunately, the first few chapters was quite repetitive with the background information.

5 out of 5 stars, a first for me

Wanting an interesting, but not a complex overly populated with ancillary characters, book to listen to I found Ms. Balogh’s romantic story of Harry and Lydia. The controlling relationships that women endured during he story’s time period was well illustrated by the author. The individual and couple conflicts the characters faced were realistic for the time period. There were no contrived plot lines or repetitious monologues used to prolong the storyline. The ending was believable and satisfying. The narrator was excellent. All in all this was an easy listen and enjoyable way to pass an afternoon. I would recommend this book to those looking for a way to escape for day without leaving their recliner.

Well written, but unsatisfying.

Her character development as always was rich, and the small details help to bring the story alive. I was however very disappointed in the ending. I waited for over 11 hours for Lydia to finally find the satisfaction she was denied only to have it alluded to and skipped over. Like eating my meat and potatoes and being denied dessert.

Sweet Story - relaxing read

The story was simply sweet and an easy read/listen. If you are not looking for plot twists and chaos but a simple romance, this is for you. Only regret is that we are running low on members of the Wescott family to read about.

I adore the Wescott Family. This is Harry's Story!

I purchased the audible copy. I absolutely love the Wescotts. Harry's story is so relatable. Two lonely souls finding comfort in each other until all hell(gossip)breaks loose. The book makes your heart melt and grin. Lydia is a woman before her time. She was a widow that had been in mourning over a year with little contact. Harry had been at the family home alone still completely recovering from the war. They found each other. Of course the Wescotts all show up because it's Harry's special birthday.

I love reading the updates about all the family. Don't hesitate...Get the book!!
