Publisher's summary

No nation can be greater than the strength of its individual homes or the virtue of its people. Sadly, many today would say ours is a nation in crisis. Families are splintering around us, our children are becoming alienated from their great cultural heritage, and our leaders seem increasingly out of touch. Yet, according to Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, one cannot lose hope. The solution lies not within our government, schools, or symbols of popular culture, but rather within ourselves, our families, and our faith.

In the tradition of William Bennett's Book of Virtues, Hinckley has created a classic look at the values that can change our world - and how to stand up for them. Drawing on anecdotes from his own life, as well as from our nation today, he examines 10 virtues that have proven through the ages to provide the most profound path to a better world: love, honesty, morality, civility, learning, forgiveness and mercy, thrift and industry, gratitude, optimism, and faith.

Standing for Something is an inspiring blue-print for what we can all do - as individuals, as a nation, and as a world community - to rediscover the values that make us strong and by which all of us can work toward a brighter future.

We thank thee o God for a prophet!

The wisdom given by a prophet to those willing to heed his teachings and to be blessed by the promises if they but do the Lord's will.

Let's neglect them no more

I was impressed from the beginning, as I listened to Mike Wallace share his Foreward. Listening to the book, I found myself feeling this is the way the world was meant to be! If everyone lived by these 10 virtues, if most of the world lived by these 10 virtues, if most of the world even lived by most of these virtues, it would heal lives, families, homes, communities, governments - just the idea of it made me decide to do better myself. I offer a friendly challenge that you invest in reading/listening to this book, choose at least one principle, apply it, and see if you don't experience increased fulfillment in your life.

Better than unbelievable!Better than great!

Besides The Book of Mormon and the Bible this was the best book I’ve ever read because it was so straightforward and easy to understand yet so bold and uncompromising. With so many personal and simple stories that are engaging and capture your attention. I gained a mountain of knowledge from this book. I like how he tells the American people that they are addicted to recreation very few people truly stand up for virtue and our leaders are quite in need of virtue and making a big deal about it because without virtue in your personal life you cannot have virtue in any of your other dealings or doings. That God loves them and that they should cleave unto God as he Cleves onto them or they will be left on their own and be miserable. But if they turn to God and follow him they will find happiness, and their marriages and their families and their nations. The message is simple wickedness never was happiness!

Power in Character

I really liked the message of this book. It breaks down what is needed for individuals to build a society with moral character. This world could really use a healthy dose of this right now.
