Publisher's summary

"Happiness is foreign, liberty but a name, and life a disappointment, to him who is denied the freedom to worship as he may desire."

This classic of Mormon literature is based on a series of theological lectures by Talmage, which were created for use in religious education. James E. Talmage was an English chemist and geologist, who moved to the United States and became a prominent figure in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. This book provides commentary and doctrinal references for each of Joseph Smith's Thirteen Articles of Faith that form the core beliefs of the LDS Church.

Scholarly and dense, the book is packed with inspirational quotes and examples and makes an ideal personal scripture study guide for members of the LDS Church. First published in 1899, it is still relevant today, and is also accessible for those less familiar with the teachings of the LDS Church.

Poor pronunciation of names.

Not sure where the narrator got his pronunciation of some names but poor job of editing not to have caught it

Theology at its finest.

A true man of God, inspired. Increadable insight into the religion I love. Pulling apart, inspecting, resolving any question of the true and living gospel.

Narration spoils a very good book

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Narration was somewhat monotonous, but I might have stuck with it, if it weren't for the additional annoyance of having to constantly hear Mormon-specific words pronounced incorrectly. I've decided to return the audio book.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Pronunciation was frequently incorrect

Both Thorough and Consise

I found this to be a very good brief explanation of doctrine, and beliefs for the LDS church. Worth reading for people looking to know more, and for people that are part of the church.

He mispronounced every word

:-!

Leaving that because I accidentally deleted my entire review with that stupid face. Grr.

What I had tried to say was that he didn't mispronounce every single word, he mispronounced almost every single word that is important to the Latter-Day Saint faith. E.G. members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. which is who this book was written for, so having a narrator who mispronounced so many words that are important to us is pretty offensive. I can't believe that this was not checked afterwards by someone who actually cares about the book. This is literally the first book I've ever listened to on Audible that I was cringing throughout. Not a fan.

Near raider of the poor job finding out about context and pronunciations

Although the narrator has a good voice and enunciated clearly it was woefully obvious that he had not studied any of the background of the text. This became most obvious in references to some of the Canon used by the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints and in the way that he would describe what should've been referred to as chapters and verses instead he referred to them as books. Even though a certain reference, such as the doctrine and covenants, was abbreviated it was obvious also that he made no attempt to try to help the listener better understand what the abbreviation meant. He also must not have interviewed anyone who is a member of the church for them to be able to help him understand the typical way in which certain words and names in particular are pronounced. I found it extremely distracting. otherwise had he been more diligent to what the listener heard than how he assumed something should have been said his narration would have been better. It is doubtful I will purchase another audible with him as narrator

Great book, average performance.

Incorrect name pronunciation very distracting. Failed to understand text. Unfamiliar with scripture. Good book and worth the time.

Horrible pronunciation

As everyone else has stated, this is a great book. But the common mispronunciation of common names from the Bible and other standard works are very detracting to the whole book. I probably will never listen to another audible book from this speaker either. But, this will probably never change. Doubt anyone who could do anything about it would even read these posts.

Clueless Narrator

This is a revered book in the LDS faith by an even more revered author. The narrator should have had a producer who had a clue as to the material they were reading. There were so many mispronunciations I had to stop listening. Not out of offense, but because it was undeniably disingenuous. I would be amazed if anyone was able to make it through listening to the whole thing
