Publisher's Summary

Emmy Award-winning actor Martin Sheen (The West Wing) lends his distinguished voice to this stirring call to move beyond religion for the guidance to improve human life on individual, community, and global levels, including a guided meditation practice for cultivating key human values.

Ten years ago, in his best-selling Ethics for a New Millennium, His Holiness the Dalai Lama first proposed an approach to ethics based on universal rather than religious principles. Now, in Beyond Religion, the Dalai Lama, at his most compassionate and outspoken, elaborates and deepens his vision for the nonreligious way.

Transcending the mere "religion wars", he outlines a system of secular ethics that gives tolerant respect to religion, but, with the highest level of spiritual and intellectual authority, makes a claim for what the Dalai Lama calls a third way. This is a universal code of ethics that transcends religion boundaries, that recognizes our common humanity and advocates for a global human community based on understanding and mutual respect.

Beyond Religion is an essential statement from the Dalai Lama, a blueprint for all those who yearn for a life fulfilled and a better world.

Critic Reviews

"An impressive guide for teaching religious tolerance and respect to readers of all ages." (Kirkus Reviews)
"This wise, humane book, an original work rather than a collection of talks, is an incisive statement of His Holiness’s thinking on ways to bring peace to a suffering world." (Publishers Weekly)

Excellent food for thought and conjecture.

Where does Beyond Religion rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

my first Audiobook

What did you like best about this story?

Although people found this book controversial or anti-religious....it's obvious they didn't read it. It is meant to unite people unlike secular religion that divides people who worship differently, It suggests more of moral and ethical examination and behavior that should be adopted and practiced by all mankind regardless of religion...the point is to unite.

What about Martin Sheen’s performance did you like?

Martin Sheen is an excellent choice to narrate, He is well spoken and as a staunch Catholic he is not offended by the text.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Too many pages for one sitting, very delightful to enjoy at night during relaxed state.

Any additional comments?

I commend both the Dalai Lama and Martin Sheen for joining together to expand the human consciousness.

Beyond Religion

If you could sum up Beyond Religion in three words, what would they be?

These two men are heroes of mine. Sheen does a clear and thoughtful reading, and the Dali Lama.... is deep.

This is a brilliant book by the wisest man of our time. If everyone read this book and took it to heart, we could solve so many of the problems we face in this world.

Spiritual people are intelligently compassionate

Would you consider the audio edition of Beyond Religion to be better than the print version?

I really enjoy all the benefits of listening to an audio text. However i am a book nut and love hard copies of the great works for reference purposes. If you are not a hard copy book collector then i highly recommend the audio version.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Beyond Religion?

Hearing The Dali Lama so eloquently explain in simple to understand terms that all religions are equal and it's the message of the spiritual oneness that we all have in common. Love and Peace between all people regardless of which belief system they have is the ultimate goal of any and all systems on this planet. There is not 1 religious leader or any other leader in the world today that preaches enlightening compassion on the level of the Dali Lama. He is genuine.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Martin Sheen?

YES! Mr. Sheen did a wonderful job. He seemed genuinely honored to be chosen to read the Dali Lamas text. His enthusiasm for the material made his rendition a pleasure to hear.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Ascension can be a simple understanding.

Any additional comments?

I gave 3 stars for performance because it took me 10 minutes to get the book to play after the download. the set up was not as user friendly as i anticipated. a friend of mine never got his to work. the program should open and start the text upon completion of the download, but i understand this is easier said than done with today's tech methods of incompatible platforms and philosophies of greed. Overall it was worth the perseverance!

The Essence of the Dalai Lama

Would you listen to Beyond Religion again? Why?

I will listen to this book over and over. It is inspirational and every point His Holiness makes bears repeating often.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the fact that this book was actually written by His Holiness himself, unlike most of his others which are actually edited transcripts of his public teachings. The Dalai Lama had something important to say with this book, so he sat down and wrote it.

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

As the title of the book implies, what the world needs now and what the people of the world are craving is a spirituality that transcends mere religion.

Any additional comments?

The message of this little book will resonate with anyone, regardless of their faith tradition.

Dali Lama speaks for the future of ethical society

What did you love best about Beyond Religion?

That Dali Lama does not raise, nor lower the importance of individual religions, and gives high respect to each person's belief.

What other book might you compare Beyond Religion to and why?

Kahil Gibran's The Prophet. Both express the importance of each persons' place on this earth, and the responsibility we each have to respect our fellow persons.

Which scene was your favorite?

I appreciate Dali Lama sharing the wise words he was given by other teacher's along his path, and the humble attitude Dali Lama retains.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Secular Ethics, do you have them and what are they?

Any additional comments?

It is my wish that many people would hear / read Beyond Religion, because if a sane approach is not found soon, our societies will teeter off the edge of the chasm of chaos.
