Phenomenal Performance!

I'm not going to summarise the story, because in all honesty, it's way better to go into this with no prior knowledge!!

This was such a fun and entertaining read!! Gustav was absolutely hilarious. He thinks of himself as the best at everything and he thinks everyone knows him or has at least heard of him and his greatness. Despite him being so cocky, he is still a very likable character because it isn't a brashy cockiness, it's more that he is so sure of his abilities and himself and doesn't care what anyone else thinks.

This was also packed with adventure and different creatures. Gustav even manages to find himself in the midst of naked giants, being put into a fight to the death and also facing a dragon, all of which is no problem for the majestic Gustav!!

In all, this was an easy book to listen to and one that had me smiling the whole way through. I really really hope we get more adventures from Gustav!

The story may have been great, but the performance by Basil Sands was phenomena! He nailed Gustav and his innocent attitude. His tones and accents were brilliant and made for effortless listening. He brought this book to life!! It sounded like he had fun with this book too because you could hear the humour in his voice.

I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

A comedy from the ages bygone

Dear god. I had to stop listening to this at work because I burst out laughing so hard that I was annoying people, and I work at a funeral home. That came at the very beginning when the Great Gustav started naming his titles, and he got to Gustav the Hyperbolist. From there I was just wrecked. This book is better than most comedies I have ever seen. It never lets up and you will be sucked into it.

It reminded me a little of the movie Eric the Viking (in a good way) way more than the tv show Vikings. Hobbes just absolutely comes out all of his guns blazing, and each one of them has a flag that pops out and says "BANG!" on it. His writing style is brilliant, and one must wonder who his comedic inspirations are.

The real star of this show, however, is Basil Sands. Dear Lord, that man IS Gustav. His accent, intonations, and cadence just nail the character. His accent is brilliant, and the way he emphasizes certain words only makes the punchlines even funnier.

Whether it is possible or not, I would love to get more of Gustav's adventures. This is one of those books you'll need to relisten to, just to catch all the jokes you missed the first time through because you laughed too hard.

Hilarious in the vein of Monty Python

I had heard many great things about this book but was hesitant because it is not my typical genre. I am very glad to say that I was not disappointed.
This book is very, very funny but with a heart of gold. For all of Gustav Gustavson’s bragging and almost narcissistic behavior, he genuinely cares about others and uses his quit wit and dumb luck to help others and save the day. He is loyal, almost to a fault but is very aware of his responsibilities to those he is on his quest with. I much appreciated that level of depth that was added to the character.

Basil Sands did an outstanding job of narrating the story. One would be hard pressed to find a narrator who can do the material justice.

I requested a free preview copy of this audiobook and I am leaving a voluntary and honest review.

Good and chuckle worthy

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Overall it is quite forgettable, but I was happily entertained for the entire duration.

This book is not exactly what I was expecting, and probably not what you are expecting. It does not follow an incompetent viking, but instead a quite capable one that sticks to his code. It just so happens he runs into quite a few ridiculous situations. You know, like hitting on a giantess, or throwing tiny little elves over undead armies, you know, things that make you laugh. Oddly enough, now that I think about, it stays pretty grounded to normal physics. Other than the dragon. And the magic. and the clever half-orc. And the fountain of youth. Yeah, other than those.

I recommend this book if you like fantasy a laugh out loud humor.

Hilarious and over the top

Gustav Gustavson is the greatest there ever is, or at least that is what he will tell you. So many of our legends and stories of great warriors of history are just mistellings of his adventures. Our common phrases, like 'finding a needling in a haystack' originate with him. Everyone has heard of him, because he is so great. And despite being arrogant and over the top, you cannot help by like him due to his sheer enthusiasm and force of will.

When Gustav is in a shipwreck he is washed up in a strange land that appears to not know him and his exploits (shock horror!) and is filled with trolls, minotaurs, dwarves, faeries, dragons etc. A strange and wonderful world with all new adventures for him.

The comedy here is great, laugh out loud stuff. You cannot help but get caught up with Gustav and his hyperbole.

Basil Sands is amazing with his narration. He gives each character so much. The tines, inflection, timing etc. are all great. And accents. Gustav has a ridiculous accent, to go with his ridiculous character. It just melds together to make the character so much more wonderful.

A great way to spend a few hours

Couldn't think of a viking with that accent.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

There are some endearing and funny moments in this book, if the narrator's chosen accent for the character doesn't bother you. If you can look past that, you will enjoy this book. I couldn't picture a viking speaking in that accent and it kept bothering me, preventing me from enjoying this book.

Was The Totally True Adventures of Gustav Gustavson: Legendary Viking Warrior worth the listening time?

See above.

Reminds me of Groo and the spongebob episode where he met the Vikings

A truly entertaining tale of a legendary Viking from
His own perspective. The tale reminds me of Groo and the episode of spongebob where he met the Vikings. It is a truly fun and crazy fast paced romp through an imaginative history based in fact and fiction both and blended to be as entertaining as possible for any and all ages. The tale
Is told with a great accent and wonderful enthusiasm. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Viking blunders through fantasy setting

They say that you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover but from the cartoonish design of the cover alone you would suspect that this is not going to be your typical Viking epic and you would be right. This book recounts the strange adventures of the titular viking Gustav after he is shipwrecked on an unknown island, an island that actually contains the usual range of fantasy archetypes from orcs to elves and even a dragon, much to the surprise of Gustav.

The style of the book is somewhat in the style of the subject recounting his adventures to a biographer and on the whole it does work pretty well, but some of the nods to the audience are a little overdone at times, but the light-hearted tone of the book doesn't come at the expense of the plot, it mostly helps to give it a bit more character.

While the narrator generally did a good job, I was not entirely convinced by his choice of accent for the main character, it was a little jarring at first and never really seemed like a perfect fit even once I had got used to it.

Overall, this was a fun listen and given the way that the author has left himself enough threads to continue, I would be happy to return for more adventures of Gustav at a later date.

A fun, light fantasy novel!

At first I didn't like this one. The narrator is boastful to the point of tediousness.
If you can move past the initial, painful plot, the story actually gets quite good!
It wasn't all that funny, but it grew to be quite an entertaining fantasy story.
So much so, I will definitely get the next in the series!
