Publisher's summary

It’s easy to get disheartened when your planet has been blown up, the woman you love has vanished due to a misunderstanding about space/time, the spaceship you are on crashes on a remote and Bob-fearing planet, and all you have to fall back on are a few simple sandwich-making skills. However, instead of being disheartened, Arthur Dent makes the terrible mistake of starting to enjoy life a bit–and immediately all hell breaks loose.

Hell takes a number of forms: there’s the standard Ford Prefect version, in the shape of an all-new edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and a totally unexpected manifestation in the form of a teenage girl who startles Arthur Dent by being his daughter when he didn’t even know he had one.

Can Arthur save the Earth from total multidimensional obliteration? Can he save the Guide from a hostile alien takeover? Can he save his daughter, Random, from herself? Of course not. He never works out exactly what is going on. Will you?

Don't miss the first parts of the series, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Critic reviews

“Hitchhiker fans rejoice! . . . [Here’s] more of the same zany nonsensical mayhem.”—New York Times Book Review

“It is Mr. Adams’s genius to hurl readers into a plot that seems to go everywhere and nowhere, then suddenly drop the pieces into place, click, click, click, like tumblers in a lock. . . . Delightful.”—Baltimore Sun

Darkest Adams Book

Any additional comments?

Likely the best written of Adams' novels, prepare yourself for the dark ending. Tight plot, excellent pacing, and truly a bummer. Loved Freeman's acting, would like to hear his candid opinions on Adams' work outside of the publicity he did for the movie.

The end....

Great story, however, was a little disappointed in the way it ended. so I guess I'm going on to the next book, AND ANOTHER THING.

Seventh time’s a charm

I really enjoyed my seventh time of this book. It’s been almost 20 years since my sixth reading, and almost 30 since my first. Everyone needs to read this at least four times in their lives.

Love Hitchiking

Hitchhiker is just plain fun. I loved the series when i was young. I read it in college, and again in Med school, and again when i started reading for pleasure again, and now I am going to listen to them all.
I cannot wait. I just wish Douglas was alive for more, but I am about to read Coffer's installment (or try) for a 6th book in the series.

Bleak

Most of the book is fairly good, but not his best. The story is building to a massive crescendo with all of the parts coming together, and then it flops at the end. I know the author was struggling with some stuff in his personal life and has admitted that even he regrets the ending. But, there is some hope in the ending, if you make your own conclusions.

Don't Panic! Martin Freeman is awesome.

All of the Douglas Adams books are a joy. I read them when I was younger, and thought I would revisit them as audio books. Martin Freeman really brings these books to life. His gift for voices and embracing character personalities is wonderful. Such talent. I enjoyed the books in a whole new way.

the most emotional entry of the series so far!

Martin brings to life another riveting tale of space misadventure! The story being a bit more serious makes the novel feel shorter than the others, and leaves you begging for the next entry.

Book 5 is the weakest of the Trilogy

...but still very, very good! Martin Freeman does a wonderful job bringing the story to life.

Great story with an ok conclusion

I love the addition of the characters Random, Colin, and Trisha. Very well rounded story that comes back to previous entries to complete the over arching storyline. A few things that you dont get in this final book are, for one, Fenchurch, whom I loved from Thanks for all the fish. She just disappears. Also no Zaphod. I love the new worlds we are introduced to though. Such as, Lumuella and NowWhat. Both had very vivid descriptions. Overall fun and new.
