Publisher's Summary

Back on Earth with nothing more to show for his long, strange trip through time and space than a ratty towel and a plastic shopping bag, Arthur Dent is ready to believe that the past eight years were all just a figment of his stressed-out imagination. But a gift-wrapped fishbowl with a cryptic inscription, the mysterious disappearance of Earth's dolphins, and the discovery of his battered copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy all conspire to give Arthur the sneaking suspicion that something otherworldly is indeed going on.

God only knows what it all means. And fortunately, He left behind a Final Message of explanation. But since it's light-years away from Earth, on a star surrounded by souvenir booths, finding out what it is will mean hitching a ride to the far reaches of space aboard a UFO with a giant robot. But what else is new?

Don't miss more from this exciting series, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Reads like it was written under deadline

There's an anecdote about eating biscuits at a train station in this book that's about two pages long. It has nothing to do with the plot, such as it is. I'd find that anecdote online and skip the rest of this book, which otherwise reads as if Adams had gotten tired of writing Hitchhiker sequels and just wanted to get it over with.

Hitchhiker is just plain fun

Hitchhiker is just plain fun. I loved the series when i was young. I read it in college, and again in Med school, and again when i started reading for pleasure again, and now I am going to listen to them all.
I cannot wait. I just wish Douglas was alive for more, but I am about to read Coffer's installment (or try) for a 6th book in the series.

Missing Adams' classic narration, but still great.

I grew up with the audiocassettes of the entire Hitchhiker's series, and loved Doug Adams narration. The story on this one is still one of my favorites of the series, but i do kind of miss the voice delivering the lines that i somehow still know by heart.

One of the Better Stories

In my opinion, So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish is one of the better stories in the Hitchhiker’s Guide collection. Granted, it strays away from Zaphod and Trillian - barely mentioning them - as well as Ford, but it does go into romance for Arthur. I’m not a fellow into romantic novels, but the subtlety of Arthur’s yearning for companionship and his chance to take hold of it are great.

It is important to keep in mind that much of what takes place in this story has very little to do with the previous stories, and there even some conflict in timeline if you consider the story to be part of a series. But, this and the other stories - Hitchhiker’s Guide..., Restaurant..., Life..., Mostly Harmless - were written independently of each other. So, it’s best to know a little background and read them as independent stories.

Douglas Adams had an amazingly creative mind. So creative that, if you thought he hadn’t imagined a thing in his life and put it to paper, you would be as wrong as a person trying to hail a taxi with just a middle finger. Such sentences as the previous one was certainly his style and, though they can be exhausting after a while, and sometimes they distract from the story, it is only for a moment and you’re amazing at the man’s imagination. (I am, at least.)

Martin Freeman did a wonderful job narrating this story, also. Well done!

Bit of fun, bit not

Its not difficult to think Adams was getting a bit bored here. I’m not sure why but bits of this just trudge on.

The part where he talks about the reader’s obsession of Arthur’s sex life is funny as all hell though, and there are still plenty of storys that get introduced weirdly and wrapped up nicely. No spoilers, but loved the ending.

So long!

Of all the books in the series this one is my least favorite. Aside from being very short it’s missing a lot of the galaxy out of the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy.

Great series!

I love these books and Martin Freeman is great! I can't wait to listen to the last book! The author has such a great sense of humor. Even breaking the 4th wall in a BOOK! lol 📚👍
