Publisher's summary

Mercy Thompson's life is not exactly normal. Her next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she's fixing a VW bus for a vampire. But then, Mercy isn't exactly normal herself.

Overall I loved it. the negatives were so small they weren't worth taking a star away.

I disliked how mercy rushed back to Adam in the end and was supposed to tell him there was a witch casting a spell... and for some reason didn't until she was already hit with it... I hate it when a character simply can't say what is needed over whatever is happening. like while Adam was looking at the moon before calling all the wolves... she could have simply said a witch is involved. what I'm trying to say is in books it's always consecutive. this happens THEN this happens... it seems the writer forgets that two things CAN happen at the same time. it really irks me when something is so easily obvious to do, but isn't done. that goes for all stories, movies, and life in general. if it is suspense that the writer wants... then there should have been an obstacle to stop mercy from being in adams hearing distance until the spell was cast. not standing next to him being silent and letting it happen because he was "looking at the moon".(or facing the moon).
and as for the speaker who read the book aloud.... she was awesome. I really like the differences in her voice for the different characters. I do wish that maybe more ppl could read to make even more of a difference. this was the first book on tape that I couldn't quit listening to. great job!!

Great Paranormal Series!

I'm so happy Audible finally got book 2 so I could start the series. The author has an interesting take on shape shifting and werewolves that I really enjoyed. I know the books get even better and can't wait to start the next one.

I also loved the reader. Too often the reader and the material just don't work together, but this is not the case with this series. I thought lorelei King was perfect for the voice of Mercy, and she did other voices, especially the male voices, very well. I'm looking forward to purchasing the entire series.

Now if Audible would only get more of Patricia Briggs -- and Sci Fi/Paranormal series by other authors, too, I'd be so happy!

I Listen Over and Over

As the review title implies, I've listened to this book (and series) more than once. After having purchased more than 100 audio books, I've gotten picky. I want my books to be good, really good. And this entire series lives up to the hype, so much so that every few months, I listen to them again.
One of the things makes this book so good for me is that it isn't all graphic sex scenes. Mercy is a strong, independent woman who seems to have a knack for getting herself into trouble with the fae, vampires, werewolves... you name it and Mercy comes in to contact with it. There is lots of action with a little romance thrown in (romance, not graphic sex).
My daughter won't even listen to this series because she doesn't like the voice of the narrator, but I don't have a problem with Lorelei King. Although her voice is a little deeper than you would expect, I think she does a fine job.
This series, along with Carrie Vaughn's Kitty series and JR Ward's BDB series, is one of the best, in my opinion.

Great series

I really liked this series. Mercy is funny and strong without the stereotypical weakness of a lot of the genre.

Mostly Reader issues.

The Reader was good but spoke quickly I had to change speed to x.5 to get a comfortable listen. She also mispronounced a couple of words which is a pet peeve.

Story was excellent.

Amazingly good!

Any additional comments?

I love it when I can read a book for a second time and enjoy even more than the first time. There are a few book worlds that I hate to leave and Mercy's world is one of them. When I finished reading Fire Touched recently, I wanted more Mercy so I decided it was time to listen to some of the audiobooks from this series that have been sitting in my audible account for a couple of years. I was surprised by how much more I liked it this time around.

This is the first book in the Mercy Thompson series and it does a really good job of introducing a large number of the key players in the series. This book is one of the really great first books in an urban fiction series. All of the world building works nicely into the plot. The book opens with a lot of excitement and you just kind of learn how things work as the plot moves forward.

I loved going back to spend time with an earlier Mercy. She is such a wonderful character. She is extremely brave in this story despite being fully aware of her limitations. She is smart and able to make good decisions under pressure. She really shows a protective side in this story with both Mac and Jesse which I really liked. It was really fun spending time with Adam, Samuel, Bran, Zee, Stephen, Jesse, Warren, and the rest of gang in this book.

The mystery in this book was solid. When a young werewolf ends up in Mercy's garage, she quickly learns that some strange things are happening. Adam is quickly pulled into the mystery and is actually quite vulnerable during much of this book. Mercy and the werewolves must find out what is going on and what their motives are in order to keep everyone safe. I really liked seeing how many things from later in the series were foreshadowed in this book. There were so many things that I didn't pick up on during my first reading.

It took me a few minutes to adjust to the narration of this audiobook. Don't get me wrong, I thought the narration was great in the end but Mercy is a character that I have been reading about for years so I had a preconceived notion about what her voice should sound like. The narrator didn't match the voice in my head at the beginning of the story but by the end her voice was Mercy's. I think that the narrator did a fabulous job with all of the different character voices. I really enjoyed how much emotion came across in her reading of the story. I definitely plan to listen to more audiobooks featuring Lorelei King's narration.

I would highly recommend this book and series to fans of urban fiction. The Mercy Thompson series along with the Alpha & Omega series which is set in the same world are among my favorites. This is a series that is best read in order so this book is a great starting point. I am looking forward to re-reading the second book in the series very soon.

Amazing characters, interesting story, bad reader

I read so many reviews praising the narrator, Lorelei King, and I just don't understand that. Her voices are sometimes over the top, definitely cheesy and most of all, distracting. The Mercy Thompson series is amazing and full of loveable characters so just get the books, read them yourself and skip the horrible narration!
