Publisher's Summary

Kayla Moore has always been comfortable with her feisty, maneating reputation. At least it was fine until she hit her 30s and saw her best friends, Stephanie and Nicola, settle down with Linden and Bram McGregor, leaving Kayla as the odd one out. Tired of being the third wheel with nothing but one-night stands and dead-end dates in San Francisco, Kayla decides to take a vow of celibacy and put men on the back burner. But she finds herself wavering the moment she lays her eyes on Linden and Bram's cousin, hot Scot Lachlan McGregor. With a steely gaze and a successful rugby career back in Edinburgh, Lachlan is the kind of man who makes her want to throw her vow right out the window.

It isn't until the two of them are thrown together one long, unforgettable night that Kayla realizes that there is so much more to this brooding macho man than meets the eye. But even with sparks flying between the two, Lachlan can't stay in America forever. Now Kayla has to decide whether to uproot her whole life and chance it all on someone she barely knows or risk getting burned once again.

"I would suggest reading rather than listening. "

I have gotten used to these quirky narrators. Yes...their accents are...original. But I love this series.
Story was strong. Shone through the narration. Worth the read!

    "Decent story, painful narration"

I wanted to like this one but I really struggled. Antony Ferguson did a fine job with the Scottish brogue but his falsetto female voice was annoying. Jillian Macie has a nice voice and her narration of Kayla was fine. Her attempt at a brogue, however, was downright painful. Truly, it was so bad that it was a distraction from the storyline. I'm not even sure what to compare it to. It certainly wasn't Scots but I can't say it was like any accent I've ever heard. Just. Plain. Bad.

If I had it to do over again, I would skip this one. It was too annoying to put up with for 17 hours. I forced myself to listen all the way through and, while the story was okay, I felt like I wasted my time. Once it was over, my lingering feeling about the audiobook was simply annoyance.

    "Couldn't go far"

I will stick with about any book that I purchase. However, this "hot and sexy" book about a 30-year-old living in San Francisco sounded more like a 16-year-old virgin's dream of what having unlimited sex was going to be like when she grew up. I agree with others that the narration doesn't help.

Things continue to devolve. When she refers to a 71-year-old mother as old and failing it was almost too much. I know she is incorporating her mothers grief in her description, but most of the 71-year-old people I know would be pretty offended with the depiction.

Narrated in first person, the young woman is supposed to be a college educated professional in a big city. She comes across as naïve and just trashy. Nothing wrong with liking sex but I don't want to hear the word "dick" 10 times in the first chapter before she even gets to the story.

I capture a romance novel every now and then for some good, simple, straight out sex, but this is just way too simple.

"Narration was difficult to listen to"

I would just agree that the narration of the story was distracting. Each narrator was fine doing their gender specific narration, but when they spoke for the opposite gender in an accent that was not their own, it was downright painful.

    "Really?"

Book was good, until the author decided it would be a good idea to romanticize the idea of being with an addict/ alcoholic. Not impressed, don't think I'll be reading anymore of her books. The book before this in this series sucks too.

    "Horrible with a Whiny Heroine"
What did you like best about The Play? What did you like least?

First hour or two were good, then it dragged endlessly. I could not stand the self righteousness of the heroine, Kayla. It was not believable in the least. I have read/listened to 1000 romance books or more in my years and felt this book to be shallow and lacking a true plot.

Would you be willing to try another book from Karina Halle? Why or why not?

I liked the first book in this series, The Pact, but author's other books have not impressed me. Whiny heroines!

What does Antony Ferguson and Jillian Macie bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    Both are very good.

Could you see The Play being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    Sam Heughan and Génesis Rodríguez

    "Better than the last"

After the last book in the series I wasn't too interested in this one but I'm happy I gave the Play a chance. I admit that I was never interested in Kayla's character, but after hearing a story, I grew to like her. Kayla is so spunky and wild. I actually disliked how Stephanie and Nicola wrote her off as the group whore. I felt for her because she seemed to be left in the dust after they had moved on to romantic relationships. Lachlan was also a very loveable character. Both he and Kayla seemed to compliment each other well. Even when things got hard and their relationship suffered it was refreshing to see to people handle things on their own before trying to be a couple again.

I think Jillian Macie was perfect for Kayla; she really bought the character to life. He Scottish accent was a little Dracula-ish but A for effort. It's not a secret that I don't care for Anthony Ferguson as a Mcgregor. I'm just going to leave it at that.

    "Looney Lachlan"

I really enjoyed the first book in the series but this one left little to be desired.Yeah Mackayla and Lachlan had plenty of steamy moments, but also Lachlan showed a side of himself that isn't so sexy or fun. He's got a ton of baggage and anger issues, alcohol and use to be into drugs. His mother left him with a foster home when he was only 5,one of his foster parents (the dad)molested him as a child. He was constantly getting into trouble and had a such a$$ attitude towards people in general. But some how,Mac falls in love with him and vice versa, but they are goimg to have to work really hard to keep their relationship from blowing up .
