Publisher's summary

Standing on the cliffs of 12th-century Ireland following the disappearance of his twin, Hoyt Mac Cionaoith is visited by the goddess Morrigan and is charged with the ultimate of tasks: saving his and all future worlds.

His enemy, the beautiful but deadly vampire queen Lilith, has had over 2,000 years of experience in cruelly killing and changing humans into one of her own - including Hoyt's brother, Cian.

Now, Hoyt, a sorcerer, must travel across the world and through time to find and train the five others Morrigan has prophesized will join him as a circle and do battle against Lilith's army of vampires on Samhain in the land of Geall.

But just who is the witch, the shape-changer, the scholar, the warrior and the vampire? How will this unlikely band of six prepare and become one with less than three months until the possible end of the world?

Following the arrival of Glenna Ward - a modern day witch with a knack for making her own kind of magic, the kind that makes his heart melt - Hoyt must find the strength to save the world, and a love that knows no bounds.

Complete the circle: listen to all three books in Nora Roberts' Circle Trilogy, including Book 2, Dance of the Gods, and Book 3, Valley of Silence.

Critic reviews

"This well-plotted, finely detailed paranormal adventure is driven by richly developed characters, making it a cut above others in this subgenre, and among Roberts's best." ( Publishers Weekly)

narrator is horrible

the book was great had read before. I almost returned because narrator is horrible and makes the females even when being boss sound very insipid and weak.

Great story; would prefer a different narrator

This book is a nice mix between witches, vampires, ancient lore, the gods, and magic. But the overarching theme is that unity can overcome all things, even when there is extreme adversity. Bringing together such diverse people with complementary talents made the book unexpected and enjoyable.

The narrator’s voice for women was awful! All of the women sounded snarky or imbecilic. I really would’ve preferred a different narrator overall for the story. Hoyt sounded like a crotchety old man rather than a brooding hot sorcerer.

The story being presented as a fireside tale by an old man to children doesn’t quite work with the themes explored in this story. I would never recount violence or descriptions of vampire activity to such detail with children.

Although the narrator remains the same for the last two books, I will finish the series. It’s a good one.

Fine book, narration unacceptable

The narrator was trying so hard to be a "creative" actor that he was often hard to understand. I have listened to several of Nora's books, and enjoyed them. This is a fine book, but the narrator would whisper at times and tried to use so many accents dramatically that many of the words were completely lost.

Very enjoyable

I could not stop listening to these three books - this being book one of the trilogy. The beginning of this book was a little hard to get into because it's difficult to put everything into context. But as soon as the characters are established it becomes very enjoyable. By the time you get to the end of book one of this trilogy, you won't be able to wait to start on book two and three.

VERY GOOD LISTEN

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. The story line is good. I'm a fan of "good vs. evil" especially with a few twists, turns and romance.

What did you like best about this story?

Keean's character.

What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His voice, of course. His Irish brogue; his ability to go from deep, husky male baritone to small, quiet and soft female voices. He brings you into the scenes through his inflections and it is if you are watching a play. Wish he would narrate more recent fiction, especially those with southern drawls, Irish brogues and lovemaking.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

I read this book many years ago but it was "flat" compared to listening.

Sound tech

The story was good, the narrator was good BUT the sound tech is difficult for those of us with hearing issues. When the narrator speaks dialogue quietly, I had difficulty understanding. Maybe it was not clearly enunciated...or his voice went into my loss spectrum.
