Publisher's summary

In this captivating novel, Mary Balogh, the premier writer of Regency romance, invites you into a world of scandal and seduction, of glittering high society and intrigue, as an arrogant duke does the unthinkable - he falls in love with his mistress.

She raced onto the green, desperate to stop a duel. In the mêlée, Jocelyn Dudley, Duke of Tresham, was shot. To his astonishment, Tresham found himself hiring the servant as his nurse. But Jane Ingleby was far too bold for her own good. Her blue eyes were the sort a man could drown in - were it not for her impudence. She questioned his every move, breached his secrets, touched his soul. When he offered to set her up in his London town house, love was the last thing on his mind.

Jane tried to pretend it was strictly business, an arrangement she was forced to accept in order to conceal a dangerous secret. Surely there was nothing more perilous than being the lover of such a man. Yet as she got past his devilish façade and saw the noble heart within, she knew the greatest jeopardy of all, a passion that drove her to risk everything on one perfect month with the improper gentleman who thought love was for fools.

Captivating read

I loved this story. I was intrigued, frustrated, angry, nervous, happy, all of it throughout the entire book. Great story. Rosalyn Landor is my absolute favorite, and Mary Balogh never disappoints. Wonderful story.

OMG! This was a wonderful susprise!

I laughed and I cried. What more do you want from a romance?! The narrator convinced me that there was more than one character speaking and it was easy to identify who was speaking. If you want a suspenseful romance, this is it.

Quite entertaining

I loved the characters in this story. I like it when the female protagonist is strong, yet able to be tender. And the villain is so very hateful that you want to choke him. Jane is brave and Tresham romantic and unwilling to fall in love. Of course there is always the HEA in a romance novel, but getting there was quite entertaining. And having Rosalyn Landor for narration made it even more enjoyable.

Another great historical romance series

This story was very good. The build up of the romance and the sexual tension made this couple special. It was almost a five star listen. I gave it four because the very end was kind of rushed and unimpressive. I feel like a good epilogue was needed to see how they "lived happily ever after". I'm defenitely listening to book 2. The narrator as always was superb. Rosalyn Landor is simply the historical romance queen.

Jane Eyre, Anyone?

I'm very surprised that I haven't come across any reviews that mention how this book is an obvious homage to Mr. Rochester and Jane Eyre. The h is even named Jane.

If you read a lot of Mary Balogh then you will notice how radically different this is from all her other work. The dialogue and the relationship is modeled directly on the wonderful repartee between Rochester and Jane. His arrogance and teasing, her quiet, rebellious retorts. It is very good and very funny whenever these two are alone together and it's nearly as endearing and wonderful as Jane Eyre for at least the first half.

When she becomes his mistress it goes way down in quality, though, sadly. Mary Balogh's stilted sex scenes are just painful to read here. It's a book where they just aren't necessary and detract rather than add.

Still, it is a very enjoyable book, one of my top five Baloghs. It was very refreshing to read something so out of the ordinary for her.

Rosalyn Landor could make every story a good story. This romantic and sexy story of Jane and her Duke is a delight to listen to. All those fine people, so pure and of high morales with tip top servants all around is fine and of course there love is fantastic in the end.

An Enjoyable Journey Back to Chivalry

I always like novels from this era but enjoyed this one more than most. It deserves it's high rating. The story was well written with a some suspense and a few surprises. It was good enough that I immediately bought the subsequent book.
