Publisher's Summary

A chubby little girl with blond hair, blue eyes, and ordinary looks, Victoria Dawson has always felt out of place in her family, especially in body conscious Los Angeles. Her parents are disappointed by their daughter’s looks.

Later in life, the one thing Victoria knows is that she has to get as far away from home as possible and, after college in Chicago (which her parents disapprove of), she moves to New York City. Landing her dream job as a high school teacher, Victoria finds joy and excitement working with her students by day--and by night continues to wage war on her weight among the sleek and buff at Manhattan’s fitness clubs. Victoria keeps a lifeline open to her family through her close relationship with her sister Gracie. For though they can’t be more different the two sisters love each other unconditionally. By contrast her parents, though across the country, still have an emotional hold on Victoria and instinctively seem to know just what to say to bring her down. Victoria knows she has been a disappointment to them all her life. No matter what she does, she can never win their approval.

When Grace announces her engagement to a man who is an exact replica of their handsome, materialistic, narcissistic father Victoria cannot help but feel even more ostracized, and like a failure once again. Ahead is a challenge and a risk: to accept herself as she is, celebrate it, and win the victories she has fought so hard for and deserves. Big girl or not, she is a gem!

    "Big Girl"

I could personally relate to much of this story. That being said, the read was much longer than it needed to be; it was very repetitive. I would've liked to see more character development. Victoria had the potential to be an awesome heroine. Regarding the story, I was disappointed that Victoria's parents never received their comeuppance for their part in the emotional abuse. And that she and her sister were so close I found unbelievable, considering her sister was nothing but a carbon copy of the very two people that abused her emotionally her entire life.

    "All too real"

This story is very close to what happened to my childhood friend. She too was the "Tester Cakè" in her family and was shunned in every way. I wanted Victoria to tell her parents how they almost ruined her life and I patiently waited to get to the scene where she would expose them. Then on the other hand I realize that Narcissistic people are in a warped world of their own. Very good read.

    "Couldn't finish!"
What would have made Big Girl better?

Less 'woe is me' repetitiveness in storyline.

Has Big Girl turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No

Would you be willing to try another one of Kathleen McInerney’s performances?

    Possibly

    Any additional comments?

The slowe- than-molasses storyline, combined with the repetitive 'poor me' laments from the main character made this impossible to finish. I love Danielle Steel, but this was torture to get through.

The story is put together very well but there are no climaxes or turning points in the story. Every time you think something interesting might happen it is left disappointing and doesn't help progress the story line.

    Story
"I agree, please don't waste your time"

A story about an unbelievably horrible set of parents and the psychological effects they have on their daughters. Lots of psychobabble about learning that one is lovable. Very sappy. Characters just weren't believable. No real plot. Certainly no interesting twists.
Even the narrator sounded sappy. But she was trying to make a major snore interesting so I give more credit.

    "A very lovely story"

I loved the way the story was narrated and the fluidity of the story line. It is a story that follows a young girl from baby to woman. Her happy times and sadness through out life. If you are like me and like well written books your love this. The narrator has a lovely voice and reads the story and characters parts very well.
