Publisher's Summary

The perfect book for the holidays: Cinderella set amid the wine-making estates of modern-day Napa Valley, complete with an evil Parisian stepmother.

Deeply in love, Christophe and Joy Lammenais built Chateau Lammenais into a small but renowned Napa Valley winery and an idyllic home where they raised their beloved daughter, Camille, who takes on increasing responsibilities for the estate they all treasure. But after Joy's early death from breast cancer just after Camille's graduation from Stanford, a lonely Christophe soon falls prey to the machinations of a sophisticate from his native France - who moves, with her two reprobate sons, to consolidate her power over Camille and the property when Christophe is killed in a plane crash. With a French "fairy godmother" on the scene, however, the son of a neighboring vintner to assist, and a grand Harvest Ball on the horizon, lovely Camille may make some potent magic of her own....

There is a story in the telling

I abhorred the person telling this story. He had no umph and was way too slow. I even timed it to 2, but that did not help at all.

Beginning good THEN DISAPPOINTMENT

I have been a Danielle Steel fan for most of my life. The Ring is my favorite book thus far that she has written. Why? She did the book justice, she did the research and gave the book tons of attention and time. Over the last several (10+) years it just seems to me that she is just meeting her contract obligations. Some of her books seem to have interesting concepts, probably based off of people she has met and experiences she has had, but the problem seems to be that the first half of the book seems to be given detail and attention and the second half seems to be rushed in a effort of wrap up the book. It's as if she gets to a certain point and then hits some magical number or chapter and feels she has reached her "mark" and then tries to tie all the ends up quickly. I just feel robbed so much of the time lately. (Spoiler alert) I wanted more detail when the husband died. I kept thinking he was going to show back up at some point. I wanted more incidents of abuse and cruelness from the step-monsters, I have more instances than those in my own life. I wanted more history with Phillip, it was alluded to but not explored enough. I wanted more deviousness from the former vineyard manager, he was such a good character. .As readers we needed more satisfaction when the step-monsters finally got their just rewards and we didn't get that satisfaction. They were just hauled off by the police. I wanted more bonding with the grandmother after all was said and done. I wanted Sam to be more involved after the private detectives gave them their report, maybe leading step-mommy on a bit of a wild goose chase. I wanted to see a little more at the ending, possibly past the wedding with Phillip. I've given several examples, but honestly if I had any connections in the publishing world I would try to publish, maybe I will try anyway. I shouldn't complain without putting something out there that I would love to read myself.

Again, I love DS. I just always want more from her.

God this was awful

I don't know what I disliked more.... the weird pacing (spending literally half the book talking about her parents backstory and maybe two pages on the climax of the whole thing), the cringeworthy self references to it being essentially the same story as Cinderella ("it's almost like I'm Cinderella and they're the evil step siblings"...uh no shit), or the repetitive dialogue and the absolute lack of any character development at all. I mean, going into this I wasn't expecting a masterpiece but I wanted it to be at least partially entertaining. Oh and the introduction of the Italian vineyard manager had all the build up in the world and the character ultimately had no point. A frustrating and disappointing read.

Very nice story

This was a lovely fairytale. It’s struggled for me in the beginning a little bit and then picked up pace towards the middle and end. I suggest this for anyone who’s just looking for a nice read

...

I always love Danielle Steel. This one was very tough to listen to. All I had to focus on was hoping that it would turn around for the lead character. And it did.

Boring Story

Sorry but this book was boring, it took me forever to finish it. The storyline wasn't very good. The reader was nice to listen to, the story wasn't.

A very different fairytale

My first Danielle Steel book. This was a modern Cinderella book, but quite different. I really enjoy the take of it being in the Napa Valley. The narrator was good too.

Modern Day Cinders

This is a great book full of escapism and easy to read. This tells a tale of a man who absolutely doted and loved his wife and they have a wonderful daughter who learns and loves the vineyard business her parents lovingly created. Sadly her mum becomes ill and passes. Then her father meets a striking woman as he is grieving who he feels heady and almost addicted to and all his sense goes out the window.

Camille his daughter sees her for what she is and even his nearest and closet friends. He marries her and life is difficult with her unruly despicable sons and her mother arrives and lives in a little cottage they renovated in the grounds. Luckily for Camille her wicked stepmother’s own mother becomes an ally for Camille who cannot stand her own daughter.

Evil StepMum treats Camille with contempt which is ramped up with the untimely passing of her father.

But Camille is no walk over and what will happen to the Evil StepMum in time? Will Camille find love? At times predictable but a great piece of escapism.
