Publisher's summary

On a warm May night in San Francisco, the Ritz-Carlton ballroom shimmers with crystal and silver as a glittering, celebrity-studded crowd gathers for a charity dinner dance. The evening is perfect - until, just minutes before midnight, the room begins to sway. Glass shatters. And as the lights go out, people begin to scream....

In the earthquake's aftermath, the lives of four strangers will converge. Sarah Sloane, the beautiful wife of a financial whiz, watches her perfect world fall to pieces. Grammy-winning singer Melanie Free, the event's headliner, comes to a turning point in her life and career. Photographer Everett Carson, a former war correspondent whose personal demons have demoted him to covering society parties, finds new purpose amid the carnage and Sister Maggie Kent, a nun who normally works in jeans and high-tops with the homeless, searches through the rubble - and knows instantly that there is much work to be done.

As the city staggers back to life, a chain reaction of extraordinary events will touch each of the survivors. For Sarah, it begins with the discovery of a crime and a betrayal, then a strength she never knew she had. For Melanie, volunteering at a refugee camp will open new worlds of possibility. And Everett will be shaken by the unlikely relationship he forges with Maggie, who helps him rebuild his shattered life - and upends her own in the process.

But as a year passes, and the anniversary of the earthquake approaches, more surprises are in store - as each discovers the unexpected gifts in a tragedy's wake and the amazing grace of new beginnings.

too nice

The first part of the book was good and the plot seemed interesting. The second half of the book was too "nice" to the point of being predictable and boring. It can be refreshing to have good morals or nice characters in a book, but not at the expense of having a plot. I used enjoy her books, but this is the first one I have read in years, and I doubt I will spend any money on any more of her books.

Amazingly Boring

I could not wait for this book to end. I think I may have enjoyed Amazing Grace is I was a 12 year old. I was so bored.

Another great DS book

The story lines were sometimes hard to follow. The narrator never changed his voice to indicate a different person was speaking. I did think changing how his voice was presented during a telephone conversation was interesting and showed better it was a telephone conversation.

Enjoyed

Story was as expected. Did not like that some of the audio for a character sounded as though they were speaking through a tin can.

Performance lacking

Overall, I enjoyed the book. I did not, however like the way the narrator did the story. I especially did not like the way he did a character while they were on the phone.

Beautiful Story and Wonderful Characters

Hadn't read a Danielle Steel in a couple of years and I'm so glad I started again with this one. As always I was enthralled. Hated when I HAD to put it down. And as with every other of Ms. Steel's books, I was sad when it was over. On to e next one!

Too predictable

It’s like a Hallmark Christmas movie. I’ll bet she wears
a red dress at the end.

Good story but too much redundance.

I enjoyed the story but too much repeating the same thing over and over and over again I get the point maybe there is a bridged
version that would’ve been better for my taste.

Disappointing Read

This must be Danielle Steel's worst novel. It's purely black and white and nothing inbetween. Kitschy and sentimental! The narrator's naive rendition doesn't help either.
