Pride and Prejudice [Audible Studios]

By: Jane Austen
Narrated by: Lindsay Duncan

Publisher's summary

"His perfect indifference, and your pointed dislike, make it so delightfully absurd!"

Pride and Prejudice has delighted generations of readers with its unforgettable cast of characters, carefully choreographed plot, and a hugely entertaining view of the world and its absurdities. With the arrival of eligible young men in their neighbourhood, the lives of Mr and Mrs Bennet and their five daughters are turned inside out and upside down. Pride encounters prejudice, upward-mobility confronts social disdain, and quick-wittedness challenges sagacity, as misconceptions and hasty judgements lead to heartache and scandal, but eventually to true understanding, self-knowledge, and love. In this supremely satisfying story, Jane Austen balances comedy with seriousness, and witty observation with profound insight. If Elizabeth Bennet returns again and again to her letter from Mr Darcy, readers of the novel are drawn even more irresistibly by its captivating wisdom.

Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice

I listened briefly to all the "Pide and Prejudice" audios on our list, before buying this production narrated by Linsey Duncan. Ms Ducan's reading is superb. Each character is given a unique voice and portrayed with such subtlety, that the novel easily flows in currents of reality. Miss Austen's language is preserved and alive. I am a serious reader of Ms Austen and I am totally satisfied with this audio.

Excellent book, excellent narrator

This was actually the first I ever "read" this book, although I had heard a lot about it. I have to say, this is one of the best credits I have spent--the book was great, and is a classic, so I won't spend much time talking about it.

The narrator was very pleasant to listen to, and did a good job of putting the correct emotions into her voice. Indignation, coyness, sarcasm, and humor were all rendered fully. The only issue I had was that once or twice I lost track of who it was speaking. That said, it is unfortunate that Lindsay Duncan has not narrated more books, as I would certainly listen to her again.

A pleasure!

Lindsay Duncan is a talented narrator, giving inflection and color to each character. Her take on Mrs. Bennett made me laugh out loud a couple of times. Really delightful! She really got the "poor me" whiny voice of Mrs. Bennett without making it grate on my ears. I love Jane Austen and especially Pride and Prejudice, so it goes without saying that I love the story. It's a classic for good reason!

This makes it an absolute joy to commute! I find myself sitting in the driveway not actually wanting to get out of the car!

Lovely melodic tone, great story, what more could you want? Highly recommended.

Such a fun novel

Probably Jane Austen's most famous book, it'll be worth your while to give it a listen! Elizabeth Bennett is so much fun. Part of what I love about her is that she is such an imperfect heroine. The follies of her mother, sister, and their cousin Mr. Collins (every family has THAT relation...!) are also written with a wink and a smile. I think this is my 4th or 5th time reading this, and I love it more each time. Do yourself the favor of watching the long Colin Firth version of P&P as well... He IS Mr. Darcy. And in that version, as I listened to this book again, I realize that the actress who played Lady Catherine was SPOT ON. The only slight disappointment here was the performance. She has a nice voice, and it's certainly not awful or irritating... She just didn't seem to 'get' Jane Austen's humor sometimes as she read certain funny conversions. Other than that I thought she did a great job. :)

Love the story!

I have always loved the story. while this is probably the best read version I have heard, the narrator still leaves something to be desired. She wasnt annoying in anyway like some of the narrators I've listened too with this book, but she could have been more expressive.

Terribly assembled

The book has 61 chapters but this audiobook is divided into 10. That's so stupid, some of these 10 sections don't even begin at the start of a chapter, they just start randomly in the middle of a chapter. If the book has 61 chapters, so should the audiobook!

Enjoyable reading of a classic story

If you love the story you'll continue to love it however it's presented, but I felt Lindsay's reading also made the book more accessible to a younger or less familiar audience. This is a very unusual genre for me to enjoy but the story holds something special even all these years later, and the narration is both fun and easy to follow despite the older language style.

better than the movie

Would you consider the audio edition of Pride and Prejudice to be better than the print version?

Both print and audio are great. I actually read and listen at the same time.
