Crime and Punishment

By: Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Narrated by: Will Poulter

Publisher's Summary

Often considered one of the first ever psychological thrillers, Crime and Punishment is a gripping tale of a poverty-stricken young man in Saint Petersburg, Russia, who hatches a plan to kill someone for money. Once the deed is done, he finds himself racked with guilt, confusion and disgust for his act.

In this new recording, Will Poulter (Detroit, Midsommar, The Maze Runner) gives new life to the troubled protagonist, Rodion Raskolnikov, in a performance that will have you questioning where we draw the line between right and wrong.

Excessively Long and Drawn Out Story

I'm shocked at how many good reviews this book has. Honestly, the violence in this book was almost too much for me to overcome. The animal abuse dream made me cry and the descriptions of his crimes were horrific. So many long conversations between characters could have been lessened toI make the book half of what it was. However, it wasn't THAT bad because I did finish it. I did seem to lose interest here and there, but I was excited to see what would happen. I did not like the main character and found him to never have learned his lesson and he was a psychopath. I did like the ending though. if you choose to read this, just know it will be very very long. I would not read it again or even recommend it.

A must!!

Will Poulter does an amazing job of being each character to life. The novel itself is truly a masterpiece!! I wish I spoke Russian and could have read it in its original form.
We may be immune nowadays to the psychological insights and turmoils of characters. This was truly world changing and masterfully done!

Captivating story, excellent narration

I had never read Crime and Punishment. I doubt I would have finished the story if reading it in book form. However, the telling of the story was captivating. The narrator was excellent and I was able to distinctly know the difficult names and the many characters from his outstanding telling of this classic novel.

Fantastic reading of one of the greatest novels ever

This was my fourth complete reading of this incredible book. I own several other audiobooks of Crime and Punishment, and 4 other print and/or ebook translations … while they are all great, Garnett remains my favorite translation, and this performance by Will Poulter is top notch.

Times change. Humans don’t.

Amazing characters reveal the many layers of the human experience and the narration made me feel like I was right in Russia alongside each one. Another reason to revisit the classics!

Good narration like this is so rare!

Very few audiobook narrators have everything it takes to make listening as immersive and transformative as the book, but Will Poulter is burning the house down on here! No one has moved me so much since Alan Rickman read “Return of the Native” . Just perfect and beautiful. Someone keep him doing audiobooks please!

Will Poulter is amazing.

Will Poulter can be the meanest, funniest, dumbest, most evil, nicest, most racist guy on screen and now you can add amazing narrator.
Great job!!!

Excellent narration

Makes listening to this classic a breeze. Narrator uses believable and consistent voice acting, though the accents are all from the UK and not Russian

The Russian names are hard to follow at times for the listener, but not for the narrator.

Excellent reading

Crime and Punishment is a classic so no complaints. (Recommend Erwin Weil lectures once you’ve finished it). This is a Constance Garnett translation which is sort of the traditional and popular version. She’s quite neutral and translates many of her works in the same style so it’s not specifically in Dostoyévsky’s style but it’s definitely a safe bet. Sound quality is excellent and Will Poulter actually did better than I expected pronouncing difficult Russian names (Russian Speaker here). His reading is actually very easy to follow: perfect speed, he uses lots of different voices and accents consistently so it makes it really easy differentiate between characters. He’s almost eerily good at female voices. At times it is quite funny hearing a Russian character with a welsh accent though :) Overall I definitely recommend this version. Especially for a British English speaker it’s a game changer finding a non American audio book of such a classic. 🙈😅

Wonderful!

A fantastic story, thought provoking and potent. Will Poulter’s narration was the best I’ve heard on audible. He has a beautiful voice and nails every accent so well.

Odd accents were a bit off-putting

Generally a good reading performance by Will Poulter but the use of British regional accents was a bit off-putting with a mix of what sounded like Welsh, Yorkshire, northeast and generic country yokel.

Superb Performance

What can be a fairly hard-going novel (and this is not my favourite translation) absolutely flies by when it is brought vividly to life by Will Poulter with a fantastic performance, giving individual and distinctive life to each character. More narrations from Mr Poulter please...

Accessible and entertaining

Never managed to read Dostoyevsky before, so many long unpronounceable Russian names! However Will Poulter me made light work of those and effortlessly brought the characters to life with an impressive array of near flawless British regional accents (show me a better non-Scouser who can do a convincing Scouse accent and I'll give you a pound). Sad it's finished, looking forward to this great team's next efforts. Don't need to say anything about the book, it's obviously a masterpiece.

A great novel, well narrated.

It took me few minutes to warm to Will Poulter's languid style, but his use of uk regional accents brought this Russian novel alive... really. The distinctive voices also helped greatly with distinguishing between characters who, in the traditional Russian manner, have at least two, or sometimes three (I think) quite different names depending on who they are talking to. A superb story as well. Definitely five stars all round. Recommended listening.

Completely Outstanding

A very skilled narration of this outstanding book. The relationship between sociobiological and psychological behaviour is explored throughout revealing the questions of our human intent.
Will poultry brings the story and the arguments to life.
I cannot comment on the translation as I have not read others. This is a wonderful story.

WOW, what a performance!

This book is amazing. I wish modern books where written in this way, perhaps I'm reading the wrong books! Will Poulter's performance blew me away, he brought every character to life and made it easy to follow along with the narrative. I've never heard such a performance like this, it made me not want to stop listening to the book!

Engrossed!

Amazing story that catches the inner deeper thoughts of not just a killer, but people in general and the weighty things that can play on your mind with the overwhelming guilt. Enjoyed it thoroughly! Will Poulter narrates the individual characters superbly.

What an incredible experience!

This was my first exposure to Dostoyevsky, and what an adventure it was! The thoroughly captivating story, along with the narrator's outstanding performance.... words cannot describe it. I will have to read this again sometime as there are definitely subtleties I have missed. And to think this was one of the free (included) audiobooks too. Thank you to everyone who made this possible.

A Wicked Book

This was a very well written book. Surprisingly ahead of its time and an intriguing read from start to finish, some parts lost me and some of the conversations in the book could be shorter or be more linked to the narrative for my taste, but other than that it deserves the title of a classic book and every bit of praise it does and will get. cheers for the book and thanks to the narrator for a great performance.

A great story and a great performance

This was a great book. It was interesting and the characters were well written. They felt organic and behaved like real people. The narration by Will Poulter was excellent, and he did well to breathe life into each and every character; making them distinct and memorable.

I think most would enjoy this audio book.
