A 2020 Audie winner - best female narrator

A Read with Jenna Today Show Book Club Pick!

Audiobook performed by Marin Ireland.

"I can’t believe how good this book is.... It’s wholly original. It’s also perfect.... Wilson writes with such a light touch.... The brilliance of the novel [is] that it distracts you with these weirdo characters and mesmerizing and funny sentences and then hits you in a way you didn’t see coming. You’re laughing so hard you don’t even realize that you’ve suddenly caught fire." (Taffy Brodesser-Akner, New York Times Book Review)

Kevin Wilson’s best book yet - a moving and uproarious novel about a woman who finds meaning in her life when she begins caring for two children with remarkable and disturbing abilities.

Lillian and Madison were unlikely roommates and yet inseparable friends at their elite boarding school. But then, Lillian had to leave the school unexpectedly in the wake of a scandal, and they’ve barely spoken since. Until now, when Lillian gets a letter from Madison pleading for her help.

Madison’s twin stepkids are moving in with her family, and she wants Lillian to be their caretaker. However, there’s a catch: The twins spontaneously combust when they get agitated, flames igniting from their skin in a startling but beautiful way. Lillian is convinced Madison is pulling her leg, but it’s the truth.

Thinking of her dead-end life at home, the life that has consistently disappointed her, Lillian figures she has nothing to lose. Over the course of one humid, demanding summer, Lillian and the twins learn to trust each other - and stay cool - while also staying out of the way of Madison’s buttoned-up politician husband. Surprised by her own ingenuity yet unused to the intense feelings of protectiveness she feels for them, Lillian ultimately begins to accept that she needs these strange children as much as they need her - urgently and fiercely. Couldn’t this be the start of the amazing life she’d always hoped for?

With white-hot wit and a big, tender heart, Kevin Wilson has written his best book yet - a most unusual story of parental love.

"Narrator Marin Ireland flawlessly introduces listeners to Lillian and Madison, two unlikely friends separated after a boarding school scandal.... Drawing from a seemingly endless supply of character voices, Ireland immerses listeners in this magical yet weird family, exquisitely capturing every unusual layer of the story.... Ireland and Wilson leave a lasting impression and provide a thoroughly entertaining experience." (AudioFile Magazine)

Flaming Funny With All The Feels...

Okay, so I am totally hooked on this listen about twins who spontaneously combust, their caretaker, her BFF (sort of,) the BFF’s politician husband, and a dude named Carl... It is both wonderfully weird and sentimental.

This is my first #KevinWilson title and @marinireland ‘s narration has me in awe of her subtle, yet specific character work. 🎧📚👍🏻

Great writing - story moved quickly

This is not my usual genre, but I enjoyed the story very much. Great writing, reflective, observant, and understanding of human foibles.

Such a great story to listen to!

I've finally discovered Kevin Wilson and will diving into his backlist for sure! Having fallen for Marin Ireland's narration in Beartown (Fredrik Backman) I was immediately drawn to trying out more of her performances (fingers crossed that her audiobook resume will continue to grow). I adore her, and she is just too perfect for this quirky, heartfelt story filled with a wonderfully authentic cast of characters. The fact that there are children who spontaneously burst into flames (or occasionally more subtlety smolder if only slightly agitated) somehow only adds to its realness. You will care deeply for these people--you will laugh and you may cry. I did all of these things and I'm left with the overwhelming sense of satisfaction found in experiencing a story that is both entertaining and moving--the joy of time well-spent. 😊

Charming book.

I really enjoyed this book and while the condition the children are afflicted with is fantasy its easy to generalize and say that what happened to these kids could have happened to any children that were not ‘normal’. It also felt true that taking responsibility for their lives helped Lillian find a purpose and love within herself that she previously didn’t know existed. Lovely book all round.

Loved this book - Narrator is perfect!

I was looking for something outside of my normal genre (I like Thrillers, Suspense, etc), and came across this as one of the titles on Audible's "Best of 2019" list. So happy that found this book! The narrator Marin Ireland really makes the character Lillian come to life, and she voices conversations really well. The concept and story is unique which I enjoyed. The book made me laugh out loud, but also had all the feels! It's a quick read, and definitely one I would recommend. I've listened to so many books this year, and can see why this one stands out and included on the list. It's very memorable.

Plenty to feel here

This book was one of the free choices That come with the subscription to audible each month. I thought it was just going to be a fun book till my next credit rolled around but it was so much more. The voices were perfect it is funny...but it’s true and real also. Good enough that I’m going to look up other books by Kevin Wilson. A rather unique take on parenting.

Little fires everywhere

My heart is full ... so much more than the book description, so much more than I expected. I laughed more than I cried, but the ending brought me close. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Loved it

The reader is perfect. She plays all the characters effortlessly and the tone for the narrator actually helped me understand the story better than if I’d read it, I think. This book is a metaphor for parenting and it is funny and well done.
