Publisher's Summary

A kidnapped girl survived 12 nightmarish years.

Now she's safely back home...or is she?

Jenny Kristal was six years old when she was snatched off the sidewalk from her quiet suburban neighborhood. Twelve years later, she's miraculously returned home after escaping her kidnappers - but as her parents and older brother welcome her back, the questions begin to mount. Where has she been all these years? Why is she back now? And is home really the safest place for her...or for any of them?

"Fantastically good - dark yet compellingly upbeat, and insanely suspenseful.... Even the twists have twists." (Lee Child, number one New York Times best-selling author)

"Dark, compulsive, full of OMG moments. If you think you know where it's going...YOU DON'T. This is one you won’t forget in a hurry." (Lisa Jewell, New York Times best-selling author of Then She Was Gone)

Critic Reviews

"Safe is an absolutely first rate psychological thriller, with a serpentine plot and complex, fully realized characters. I picked it up before bedtime - an amateur mistake, in retrospect - and kept whispering just one more chapter to myself until I'd finished the whole damn thing." (Cristina Alger, New York Times best-selling author of Girls Like Us)

"Safe is everything you want out of a thriller and then some. Emotionally fraught storytelling with crisp prose and perfect pacing in service of one hell of a twisting journey home." (Michael Koryta, New York Times best-selling author of Those Who Wish Me Dead and If She Wakes)

"All I can say is WOW. This is the very definition of a page-turner. Compulsively readable from the beginning and then as you get past that first twist, absolutely riveting. The kind of 'pull the carpet out from under you' blockbuster that made The Girl on the Train and The Woman in the Window such huge hits. What a diabolical read! Should be a number one best seller!" (Christopher Reich, New York Times best-selling author of The Take and Numbered Account)

It's SAFE To Say that SAFE Is A Wasted Credit!

How did this book receive such stellar reviews?

The beginning of this book was painfully slow and repetitive. The book's "surprise" ending was predictable and very anticlimactic.

Many of the book's details were unrealistic. When a missing child suddenly appears many years after being reported missing......shouldn't some due diligence be done by law enforcement? (DNA testing, extensive interrogations, etc) Well, that did not happen here.

Brittany Pressley is one of my favorite narrators and she did an outstanding job with the narration of a book that received a one-star overall rating simply because Audible does not provide a "zero star" option.

I will be requesting a refund.

Narrator - PLEASE LEARN the difference

between the 2 ways the word "wind" can be pronounced ( this lesson was taught in 4th grade in the 🏫 school I attended). This word when a character in this book hacks into a school's site and is "winding her way through records" SHOULD Be pronounced 'winding' as in winding a watch stem NOT pronounced "wind" as in "the wind blows" with an "ing" tacked on to the end (it is NEVER pronounced that way in common parlance)!

Does NO ONE REVIEW these audiobook recordings before they are put on the market? if not Audible personnel, please - hire ME to do so. I have 2 decades of writing / editing experience and find basic grammatical errors in 50% (at LEAST) of your recordings. This narrator makes the SAME pronunciation error every time she encounters the word "winding" (pronouncing the 'i" with a 'soft' i as in "wink" when it should be pronounced "eye" {W'eye'nd}.

Small issue, maybe to YOU, it pulled me right out of the storyline. Other than that GLARING prononciation error, the narration was excellent, the storyline captivating and the characters are engaging and we'll developed. Solid addition to this genre of novel.

Very dark and disturbing

Brittany Pressley is amazing...she is one of my favorite narrators. The story
was intriguing...but way too many unnecessary details. The worst part was
the foul language. I know writers like to write like people talk, but on audible
I just can't handle it. I had to know what really happened so I listened to the
end, but I was feeling pretty sick by the time the big reveal came. The disturbing
details were repeated over and over and over again...once was enough for me.

Just Awful

I can’t tell you how much I hated this book. Bad story, poor character development and just all around awful. I am returning it so save your credit.

Best Book of 2020

This was by far the best book I have read all year, possibly more than that! Never a dull moment! Even though I pretty much had it figured out by the 30% point, I didn't know it all and it was worth the ride to the end to see how it all played out. There were definitely twists that were unexpected. Excellent storyline, character development, and narration as always by Brittany Presley.

Winner winner chicken dinner

A seemingly straight forward novel becomes a twisty mystery. The story was excellent as was the narrator. I eagerly await SKBarnett’s next novel.

Great!

Wasnt sure how this was going to play out, you obviously know it's not going to play out as expected but it definitely keeps you on your toes as you are traveling through it. Very easy to follow, character development was not anything special and I wont think about them now that I have finished. with that said it was still an entertaining book and I am happy with the purchase.

What a awesome thrilling ride!

This is the first book I’ve read by this author. Just one shot right up onto my must buy list! I never expected some of the twists and turns at the very end. Yes, I thought I had it figured out but I was wrong! The characters are well rounded and just enough edgy to make you question each one. That is what makes a great thriller! If you like B.A. Paris, or Sherry Lupino, then you will definitely like this book. Give it a try because it is worth the credit! Now I have to wait until next year for the next book!

Talk about disturbing!!

This book was really good. I only gave it four stars overall because it took a third of the way to heat up. The beginning is not really believable to me. At times it was painful to listen to and I would be lying if I said there weren’t several times where I had to pause it because bile was beginning to rise up in the back of my throat. This is definitely a book where you think you know what’s coming and all of a sudden you’re like well that’s not it, this happens a few ńy, mmmWill Trent novel, and Night Swim by Megan Goldin. iyyy
