Publisher's summary

Joan Morgan offers a provocative and powerful look into the life of the modern Black woman: a complex world in which feminists often have not-so-clandestine affairs with the most sexist of men, where women who treasure their independence frequently prefer men who pick up the tab, where the deluge of babymothers and babyfathers reminds Black women who long for marriage that traditional nuclear families are a reality for less than 40 percent of the population, and where Black women are forced to make sense of a world where truth is no longer black and white but subtle, intriguing shades of gray.

Still fresh, funny, and irreverent, When Chickenheads Come Home to Roost gives voice to the most intimate thoughts of the post-civil rights, post-feminist, post-soul generation.

It's still relevant

Yes, some of the material may be outdated. However, when the book was written, it wasn't. This is a very good start to many important conversations about Black Feminism and even modern preconceptions of the "Strong Black Woman". I'm a fan.

Required reading for every black girl and woman.

Finally, someone gives simple language to the complicated relationship between the black woman & the black man.

A must Listen!!

This is one book that the spoken experience adds to the content and experience. At the tender age of 45, this book helped me find and LOVE myself. WELL DONE!

Right mindset

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. When I first start listening to it,I have to admit I wasn’t in the right mindset to receive it. Once I got there it spoke to me I received the message loud and clear and it gave me the encouragement I needed to carry on. The narrators did a wonderful job bringing this story to life. To be happy in your truth and to see the positive in your current situation is a blessing. Truly grateful for the wisdom.

exceptional conversation

Joy Bryant is a treat. Her narration was perfect. Joan's writing was like sitting in a room full of friends discussing hip hop and feminist culture now, then and in the future. Not a guide, so you the reader are involved. Excellent.
