Hindolo, a storyteller, returns to his hometown after 30 years and recalls the solitary and formidable old man who opened his home to him and introduced a world of literature and imagination, which for many years, was his only escape. Hindolo begins writing the stories down on paper stolen from a nearby mine to share with his classmates.
“We will be stealing,” he remembers one of his old friends exclaiming.
“They are already stealing from us anyway,” Hindolo responds.
A thought-provoking story that returns to the basics of fiction and freedom, The Door to Tamba stays with one long after listening.

It was a sweet story
I really liked that the children were so taken by the stories in the books and that they had a mentor who wanted to share the joy. It is another reminder that everyone in the world is not as fortunate as we are. The speaker had a very nice voice and helped to bring the story alive.

Such an excellent story
Told from the perspective of a precocious student, describes his relationship with a village elder who teaches him much more than the boy learns at school, simply by allowing him to read the old man’s books.
