Publisher's Summary

Angela Davis has been a political activist at the cutting edge of the Black Liberation, feminist, queer, and prison-abolitionist movements for more than 50 years. Angela Davis: An Autobiography, first published and edited by Toni Morrison in 1974, is a powerful and commanding account of her early years in these struggles.

Davis describes her journey from a childhood on Dynamite Hill in Birmingham, Alabama, to one of the most significant political trials of the century: from her political activity in a New York high school to her work with the US Communist Party, the Black Panther Party, and the Soledad Brothers; and from the faculty of the philosophy department at the University of California at Los Angeles to the FBI’s list of the "Ten Most Wanted Fugitives".

Read by Angela Davis herself, this autobiography, told with warmth, brilliance, humor, and conviction, is a classic account of a life in struggle, with echoes in our own time.

Good story of an interesting person

it doesn't follow the point A to point B timeline, though it's still a great story. I suggest you speed up the playback speed due to the academic delivery of Dr Davis.

I’m thankful that this book was available in audio

I’ve had paper copy of this book for a while but listening to Ms. Davis read the accounts of her life was more than reading and understanding. It was experiencing.

Great storytelling, incredible journey

Such terrible treatment by our government, powerful story. Freedom of speech repeatedly held up despite racism, bigotry, and fear

In her on voice

A little before my time, I'd heard the stories about Ms. Davis that gave me a very basic understanding of her tremendous contribution to the re-upliftment of our people. But it really was just that, a basic understanding. Borderline caricature (I'm ashamed to say). My Black Power elder with the gorgeous fro. I came across her autobiography in my Audible suggested books, and had to buy it. Love that it's in her own voice. And that after listening to her life story (the early years) I now have a fuller understanding of her journey, work, and sacrifices. Thank you Ms. Davis.
