Remember when we hit it off so well that we decided we’re going to need more wine? Well, this time you and I are going to turn to our friend the bartender and ask, you got anything stronger? I promise to continue to make you laugh, but with this round, the stakes get higher as the conversation goes deeper.

“Can I kiss you?” It was two months before the world premiere of Juno, and Elliot Page was in his first ever queer bar. The hot summer air hung heavy around him as he looked at her. And then it happened. In front of everyone. A previously unfathomable experience. Here he was on the precipice of discovering himself as a queer person, as a trans person. Getting closer to his desires, his dreams, himself, without the repression he’d carried for so long. But for Elliot, two steps forward had always come with one step back.

Just as I Am is my truth. It is me, plain and unvarnished, with the glitter and garland set aside. Here, I am indeed Cicely, the actress who has been blessed to grace the stage and screen for six decades. Yet I am also the church girl who once rarely spoke a word. I am the teenager who sought solace in the verses of the old hymn for which this book is named. I am a daughter and mother, a sister, and a friend. I am an observer of human nature and the dreamer of audacious dreams.

His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

Whether she’s playing an “age-defying” book editor on television or dazzling audiences on the Broadway stage, Sutton Foster manages to make it all look easy. How? Crafting. From the moment she picked up a cross stitch needle to escape the bullying chorus girls in her early performing days, she was hooked. Cross stitching led to crocheting, crocheting led to collages, which led to drawing, and so much more. Channeling her emotions into her creations centered Sutton as she navigated the significant moments in her life and gave her tangible reminders of her experiences.

There is absolutely no logical reason why I am here. The life trajectory my nationality and class and circumstances portended for me was not even remotely close to the one I now navigate. But logic is a science and living is an art. The release I felt in writing my first memoir, Not My Father’s Son, was matched only by how my speaking out empowered so many to engage with their own trauma. I was reminded of the power of my words and the absolute duty of authenticity.

Publisher's summary
From the incomparable Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award winner, a powerful and revealing autobiography about race, sexuality, and art.
It’s easy to be yourself when who and what you are is in vogue. But growing up Black and gay in America has never been easy. Before Billy Porter was slaying red carpets and giving an iconic performance in the celebrated TV show Pose; before he was the Tony Award-winning star of Broadway’s Kinky Boots; and before he was an acclaimed recording artist, actor, playwright, and all-around diva, Porter was a young boy who didn’t fit in. At five years old he was sent to therapy to fix his effeminacy. He was endlessly bullied at school, sexually abused by his stepfather, and came of age in a world where simply being himself was a constant struggle.
Unprotected is the story of a singular artist in his own words. It is the story of a boy whose talent, courage, and desperate determination led him through countless hard times to where he is now; an icon whose refusal to back down in the face of adversity has made him an inspiration to millions. Porter is a multitalented, multifaceted treasure at the top of his game. A soaring, resonant story, full of new revelations, and shot through with his stunning wit, Unprotected will entertain and inspire.

Outstanding and very intimate personal sharing
I full heartedly recommend listening to this book as narrated by Billy Porter. Yes he so genuinely does, Billy brings his full voice and emotion to this autobiography and even sings which is such a gift and welcome surprise when listening to the book. The best book I have listened to all year. I’ve truly enjoyed this and been inspired. Billy sprinkles his life lessons and teachings throughout the book. I found this sharing most moving…”Your service is leaning into your truth. Your authenticity. That thing you’ve been told needs to be fixed. That thing everyone told you will be your liability. You are enough, just as you are. “. Absolutely outstanding book. Highly recommend. Two thumbs up, five stars. We need an award to be presented for the narration of books. Billy would win this award, hands-down.

I didn't know his name
I hadn't heard the name Billy Porter. I don't follow Hollywood or Broadway enough to know stars but I had 3 credits so I decided to try out this book and I'm SO glad I did! He's an activist, a fighter, and a kind soul. I usually end up disliking people after reading their memoirs, but that's not the case here. I'm sure it helps that I went in with a blank slate, but my what an amazing man Billy Porter is!

Thank you for your story and for sharing. And if everyone who hears your story, doesn’t feel convicted to show love and compassion for someone who doesn’t look like them. Walk like them. Billy only really entered my radar within the last five years. Engaging, vulnerable and hilarious
I absolutely loved hearing this story, and it is made even better with the author narrating (and singing) it. I would recommend this to everyone. From a challenging childhood through the AIDS epidemic, breaking into broadway and his long journey to the recognition he deserves, Porter is so engaging, vulnerable and hilarious that the only disappointment was when the book ended.

Amazing!
Everything about the story was beautiful and my absolute favourite thing is that Billy Porter himself read the book! No one would have done is justice!

Rich, gorgeous storytelling
Billy is a natural story teller. There’s some really hard, sad bits but ultimately it’s such an uplifting story. Billy’s spirit is incredible!

Story
Remember when we hit it off so well that we decided we’re going to need more wine? Well, this time you and I are going to turn to our friend the bartender and ask, you got anything stronger? I promise to continue to make you laugh, but with this round, the stakes get higher as the conversation goes deeper.

Story
Angela Davis has been a political activist at the cutting edge of the Black Liberation, feminist, queer, and prison-abolitionist movements for more than 50 years. Angela Davis: An Autobiography, first published and edited by Toni Morrison in 1974, is a powerful and commanding account of her early years in these struggles. Read by Angela Davis herself, this autobiography, told with warmth, brilliance, humor, and conviction, is a classic account of a life in struggle, with echoes in our own time.

Story
“Can I kiss you?” It was two months before the world premiere of Juno, and Elliot Page was in his first ever queer bar. The hot summer air hung heavy around him as he looked at her. And then it happened. In front of everyone. A previously unfathomable experience. Here he was on the precipice of discovering himself as a queer person, as a trans person. Getting closer to his desires, his dreams, himself, without the repression he’d carried for so long. But for Elliot, two steps forward had always come with one step back.
