Critic Reviews

"Reads like a classic thriller, with an everyman hero alone and in danger in a hostile foreign city...but it’s all true, and it’s a story that needs to be told." (Lee Child)

One of the best books I ever listened to

I loved this book. The story is amazing, but it is shocking that everything is true. However I was absolutely captivated by it and by the narrator performance. You feel like you are living the story with Bill Browder and you will not want to stop listening till you get to the end of the book.

Excellent book

I loved this book. It reads like a thriller and it reinforces the belief that fact can be stranger than fiction. Before reading this I knew that Russia was a dangerous place to do business but I had no idea how deeply corrupt the government remains to this day.

Engaging and important story

With Crimea, Trump, Olympics and world cup being won by Russia, this is an incredibly timely. Browder's experience paints a deeply compelling picture of the wrongs of the world we live in and the lengths one must go to to change the status quo.

My only criticism is that the story has clearly had the Hollywood treatment, however it does make for a well paced read/listen.

True picture of machinations of post-Soviet Russia and its government

Bill Browder's story of the financial situation in post-Soviet Russia is well told with excellent imagery of the situation faced by the Russian people and those who sought to take advantage of the gold rush to be had. The details provided about how the government sanctioned the illicit activities of the police and federal law enforcement were astounding. The sad truth about the consequences that were personally experienced by Sergei Magnitsky was both shocking and heart wrenching. This book is a must read for anyone interested in Russia, Russian history, or in knowing the true situation of life in Putin's Russia.

Amazement, disbelief and tears

This book is one of the most interesting books I have read in a long time, and far more than just a biography. The background information about how the banking system and investment funds work is fascinating, and the insight into the Russian way of 'banking' and politics is eye-opening and downright scary. Disbelief and amazement describe this part of the book. The personal story of the author and his fight for justice for his friend, and his achievements in this fight were what made me cry on several occasions. I am glad that I bought the audible version of the book, as I particularly enjoyed listening to Bill Browder himself reading out the last chapter. It made the whole experience of the book far more personal. All in all I would say this is a must-read for anybody who is interested in our modern world of finance and politics, as it gives an insight to what goes on behind the scenes, and it also shows what one man with determination and perseverance can achieve.

Share this story with as many people as you can

A genuinely moving true story of how a corrupt regime will go to any length to steal money and undermine judicial systems to cover it up and murder a very brave man who would not be intimidated to change his testimony to suit their purposes.

Reads like a crime thriller

This book reads as if was a fictional crime novel but it's one of the hardest hitting pieces of non-fiction you'll ever read (listen to). The stories of corruption and personal accounts of those fighting it are so moving it brings tears to the eyes.

Very well written

I never thought I would feel an ounce of compassion for either lawyers or financiers but I was wrong. This is a 'can't put down' listen.
If only half of it is true then I am afraid it is a shockingly sad indictment of government cruelty.
Excellent narration by Adam Grupper.

absolutely shocking the level of corruption in 'modern' day Russia. This audiobook details state sponsored theft in alarming detail, naming the individuals responsible for murder, embezzlement and corruption. I hope some day there will justice.

No Russian Spy Novel Can Match This

Exciting, Surprising, devastating AND hopeful. A must-read. A twisted tale simply written. Style is visual without being flowery- perfect for audible. And they cast exactly the right voiceover guy . You will stop what you’re doing as you listen. Your heart starts beating faster and yet you can’t move until you find out what happens next. And because it’s true, you will cry. And then you’ll share it with a friend. Because you will want other people to know what you’ve just experienced.

Remember Sergei Magnitsky

A book of 2 halves; the first an interesting biography of an unconventional investor/entrepreneur, the second a searing indictment of the corrupt elements within the Russian state and, once exposed, their Phyrric attempts to discredit him. I had heard of the Magnitsky Act, but ashamed not to have known the details.

Browder

I forgive the little self indulgences of Bill Browder (setting himself as a super hero) , because this true story is extraordinary, and I learned so much from it. Highly recommended.

Red Notice - essential reading for everyone

Extraordinary true story of corruption, politics and the Russian psyche,
All the more horrifying as it describes events that are so recent.
So sad to see an amazing country robbed and manipulated by so many villains and the corruption going all the way from the police and prison officials to the tax office and all the way to the top.

Riviting true story.

This was a riviting true story but not the type of book I would normally read. I found it intriguing and amazing the opportunities discovered by Bill Browder, and the absolute belief in what he thought he could achieve in Russia. Then the reality of what really happens in Russia comes home to roost. Bill is single minded in his pursuit of justice and upholding his humanitarian beliefs.
Great true story.

Fascinating story of finance, crime and corruption in Russia

Riveting story of the rise of hedge fund manager Bill Browder in Russia before incredible tales of corruption, crime, politics, intimidation, tragedy, fight for justice and more.

Incredible read, I couldn’t put it down.

Worth the investment. Highly recommend!
