Editorial Reviews

Dorah Williams’ real-life ghost story begins like so many others: A young family moves into a historic mansion, its untold history and baroque trappings portending supernatural secrets. Nevertheless, this is no fiction, nor is it cliché: The Williams matriarch’s memoirs aren’t so much terrifying as bewildering, vaguely eerie. At times Williams’ ghosts are playful, almost childlike, and they don’t necessarily forebode a horrific ending for the house’s inhabitants. An uncanny experience nonetheless, Haunted receives a suitably spooky send-up from established documentarian Katina Kalin, who captures the warmth, wonderment, and worry of this vigilant mother. Kalin cuts through whatever incredulity might belie Haunted, and lends authenticity - even a sense of familiarity - to the Williams family’s plight, so that listeners will empathize with their paranormal predicament.

Publisher's Summary

It was an irrational decision. Despite having just moved into a beautiful new house, the Williams family gave in to an odd, overwhelming desire to purchase and move into a Victorian home they had come upon by chance. They were curious, of course, as to why the house had, in the past, such a high vacancy rate - no one ever seemed to live in it for a long period of time. But that curiosity didn't last long, because shortly after moving in, strange things began to happen. It became abundantly clear that the home's past owners all had a reason for leaving: fear. The Williams' new home was haunted. At first, the family tried telling themselves there were logical explanations for the strange things they all were witnessing. But before long they came to accept the fact that they were sharing their home with ghosts. Haunted is the Williams family's story from the point of view of the mother, Dorah. Through her chilling reminiscences, we witness the all-too-real goings-on in the house. And we join the family as they seek a way to bring an end to the paranormal events that were occurring with ever more frequency and intensity, and learn why the events began in the first place.

This purchase will haunt me for a long time

What disappointed you about Haunted?

The story was dry and meandering. I just couldn't bring myself to care about the events or the characters, and I tried! There was zero chill factor or creep factor. I have never been so bored by paranormal events. I couldn't make it much past 60 minutes before I pulled the plug.

What could Dorah L. Williams have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I can't think of anything. It just didn't appeal to me on any level.

Would you be willing to try another one of Katina Kalin’s performances?

NO WAY! Her narration only added to the problem. I felt like I was five, sitting in the floor of the public library and Miss Katina was reading us a story before nap time. Her portrayal of child characters drove me insane. She used a voice that reminded me of how some people talk to children like they have the intelligence of a doorknob. Her use of a "baby talk" voice elicited actual frowns and grimaces from this reader.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Mega disappointment! I like non-fiction stories that approach the paranormal from middle ground, letting the reader shape opinions and personal atmosphere based on their own perceptions. I was never able to concentrate on the aspects of the haunting because I was too busy not enjoying this book.

Any additional comments?

It didn't work for me at all. The performance was pretty bad BUT that is me. I love stories like those built around Ed and Lorraine Warren's experiences so perhaps I'm tainted. If you like the kind of ghost story one would find haunting the pages of "Good Housekeeping" or "Reader's Digest"... this is your story!

Excellent and entertaining book! Enjoyed it!

Would you listen to Haunted again? Why?

Yes. I love stories about real haunted houses and this one was chilling and intense.

What did you like best about this story?

How the family held together during the haunting.

What does Katina Kalin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

A very good story teller who brings you right into the book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not really, but I found it so good I didn't want to stop listening to it. I'd definitely listen to it again.

Any additional comments?

If you enjoy true haunting stories, you'd enjoy this book.

Enjoyable, but not great

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, it is entertaining, but not great.

If you’ve listened to books by Dorah L. Williams before, how does this one compare?

No

What three words best describe Katina Kalin’s voice?

Pleasant when natural, but grating when doing other voices. The children's voices are irritating.

Do you think Haunted needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No. The story is done.

Any additional comments?

The story was pleasant, a good story. However, I would like the writing style to be less motherly. Hug this, kiss that, gets old. It kind of came across as personal, family business of which I was not a part. Ms.Kalin's voice was pleasant, enjoyable even, when she was speaking as she would normally, but she missed pretty badly when going for male voices. The voices she did for the kids was just painful, and hard to listen to.
REALLY BAD NARRATION AND RECORDING

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Probably no one. There are several parts where the narrator's voice doesn't match from sentence to sentence. It's like there was a revision and the original narrator wasn't available. Also there were parts in the story where I just rolled my eyes and said "Oh please". It sounded like made up BS and parts were thrown in just to try to make certain pieces fit into the story telling. Pretty poor writing and narration

What do you think your next listen will be?

nothing by this author or narrator

Would you be willing to try another one of Katina Kalin’s performances?

nope, never

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No.

Any additional comments?

Don't waste the credit

Decent story but horrible narration!

The story was pretty good but the lady reading it was horrible. She tried to make the kids in the book sound different and she gave them a lisp. It was like nails on a chalkboard listening to her.

A Family's Journey

What made the experience of listening to Haunted the most enjoyable?

This book caught my attention because it seemed to be the story of a family similar to mine and I wanted to read about how another family dealt with the paranormal. I loved the close attention to detail which helps to paint a picture for listeners. I felt encouraged by the strength of the author as she faced real phenomenon and yet found ways to continue to live her life and to protect her family. Her empathy and ability to see issues from other people's perspective served her well in the telling of her story. I enjoyed the narrator and found her voice and emotion contributed to the way the story was told and how I was able to picture the family and their home so clearly.

Have you listened to any of Katina Kalin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not heard this narrator before.

Any additional comments?

The research that the author does yields some astounding facts. Many folks who experience the paranormal are unable to find details about the history of their homes or the land upon which the home sits. The extensive history available to the author makes this story complete and I believe helped her to stay focused on finding a resolution the haunting her family experienced.

A Friendly Haunting

Any additional comments?

Not really a Haunting but more of a weird things happen but nothing scary or harmful. Family lives in house for many years and occasionally weird stuff happens. The Ghosts are friendly children who basically leave them alone unless they get bored. Which is exactly what I felt at times "bored". Also the narration is awful because it frequently cuts out to a different woman doing edits.

Not the worst story but kind of boring and pointless. Nothing really happened to this family I don't know why they even wrote a book about this mundane haunting.

Good Book

I had trouble getting through this book because I found the voice the narrator used to represent the young daughter Rosa very, very annoying.

Wonderful account of a haunting!

Wonderfully told story of a haunting. It made me feel compassion towards these benign spirits. It also clarified that a haunting could be occurring to help us understand a spirits sadness or feelings.

Decidedly Average

Good story with dubious sections, rendering the story less believable. Average narration with poor characterisation.
