This psychological thriller follows a family to their Appalachian farmhouse where they encounter an unimaginable horror.
In the summer of 1994, psychologist Daniel Hill buys a rustic farmhouse nestled in the rolling hills of West Virginia.
Along with his wife and teenage daughter, the family uproots their lives in Ohio and moves south. They are initially seduced by the natural beauty of the country setting. That soon changes when they discover a hidden room in the basement with a well, boarded shut and adorned with crucifixes.
Local legends about the previous owner being an exorcist come to light, but by then, all Hell has broken loose.
This 1990s horror novel is perfect for fans of family thriller books, stories of demonic possession, exorcism fiction, the occult, or thrillers like The Exorcist, A Head Full of Ghosts, and The Amityville Horror.

Meh at best.
Nothing great, but alright I guess

I appreciate how Nick not only succeeded in getting me to hate the Hill Family (main characters) and cheer for them in the same breath. (I do apologize if that wasn’t the intention behind the Hill Family, just giving my honest opinion)
The dynamic of the Hill family was truly infuriating as well as utterly obnoxious. To be honest, only one of them was likable and she got points only because she’s a teenager and they’re supposed to be ridiculous. Despite their awful flaws, I absolutely love them. They all have “real” traits. They are occasionally shallow, but modest when it comes to how they want others to perceive them. I can genuinely see a lot of my past psychologists thinking the same exact way about themselves on a day to day basis as Daniel, not Mr. Hill, does. Despite my personal loathing for the Hills, their love for their family and hopeful outlook is quite a beautiful thing.
The descriptions of the world of the Exorcist House, the way Nick intentionally gives you just enough information but not to the point of overkill, is what I wish I would get from more authors. I can envision everything that is happening as if it was on the screen. This - as well as the others, need to be a trilogy plus more … like the Conjuring Universe. It’s hands down amazing. Whomever scoops this up is the next big thing. Cause…hot damn.
I adored this book and wanted to throw it sometimes. It made me question a lot of my fears of the basements, the unknown , and anything that is not of this world. I cannot wait to see more from Nick.
Also- the narrator doing “that voice” scared me so much I actually yelled wtf while out in public listening. I did NOT expect that at all. Great job Spencer!
The Bloodhound is a better creature than most of the others.
