Dark, powerful, twisty thriller
- By MA Reviewer on 03-04-23
Publisher's summary
Forty-year-old nurse Terry Painter enjoys a solitary existence. Her tranquil life takes a turn, however, when young, vibrant Alison Simms rents the cottage behind her, bringing friendship and excitement.
But after the initial euphoric wave, Terry soon finds that the friendship that once brightened her days now has her fearing for her life! Can she reclaim her life before Alison's past catches up to them?
Critic reviews
"An ending worthy of Hitchcock....The brutal denouement will shake readers lulled by the tale's cozy trappings, but those familiar with Patricia Highsmith's particular brand of sinister storytelling will recognize the mayhem Fielding so cunningly unleashes." (Publishers Weekly)
"The author keeps the tension high and the pages turning, creating a chillingly paranoid atmosphere." (Booklist)

Story
This gripping fictional true crime podcast delves into the story of the enigmatic Dorian Gray, a vigilante who changed the world, rewriting history in the blood of her victims. Her targets were the titans of their era—billionaires, movie stars, politicians. Dorian said they had one thing in common: they had all committed crimes against women. They were rapists, abusers, master manipulators. Dorian left evidence of their heinous offenses with their bodies, and then she vanished without a trace.

Emma is the one that got away. The only survivor of a serial killer known in the tabloids as “The Hairdresser”, because of the trophies he takes from his victims. The police aren't convinced. Nor is her husband. She never actually saw her tormentor properly, but now she recognizes him in every man she sees. Haunted by the horrifying incident and unwanted notoriety, Emma gives up her job as a psychiatrist and retreats from the outside world to recuperate at home, where it’s quiet. A voicemail from her estranged sister, Melanie, sends Robin’s heart racing and her mind spiraling in a full-blown panic attack. Melanie’s message is dire: Their father, his second wife, and his 12-year-old stepdaughter have been shot - likely in a home invasion - and lie in the hospital in critical condition.

Story
As Sheriff John Weber would attest, the deadliest predators to date in his tiny hamlet were the alligators lurking in the nearby swamps. But that was before someone abducted and murdered a runaway teenage girl...and before the disappearance of popular and pretty Liana Martin. The pattern is chilling to Sandy Crosbie, the town's new high school English teacher who wishes she'd never come to the seemingly quiet town with shocking depths of scandal, sex, and brutality roiling beneath its surface.

Chilling paranoia or black comedy?
I have to admit that I really love books (and movies) that surprise me so much that they take my breath away. They are very rare, and this is one of them. I'm hoping that the Audible editors will consider making this book a Daily Deal so that others can discover it. Bravo, Joy Fielding!

Horrid
It started off great, got verrry boring for most of it, then became the worst book I've ever read in my life and I've read doozies. After this, I honestly won't ever read another Joy Fielding book ever again. They keep getting worse and this one is so horrible it defies explanation. Fielding appears to have forgotten that people want to ENJOY books, not have really horrid and terrible experiences reading them. I wish I could get my money and time back. This book was just horrid.
