Publisher's summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Sandra Brown returns with a fast-paced, emotional thriller where the lives of a young mother and a high-rolling consultant collide under devastating circumstances—culminating in a desperate manhunt that will change their futures forever.

At a Texas county fair, amidst carousels and a bustling midway, children’s book author Elle Portman is enjoying a rare night out with her favorite cowboy: her two-year-old son, Charlie. But just as they’re about to head home, the unthinkable happens: a shooter opens fire into the crowd, causing widespread panic to erupt all around them.

Also caught in the melee was corporate consultant Calder Hudson. Arrogant, self-centered, and high off his latest career win, he’s frustrated and confused when he wakes up in the hospital after undergoing emergency surgery on his arm. The doctor tells him that he was lucky—that as far as gunshot wounds go, he pulled through remarkably well. Others weren’t so lucky, which instills in Calder a furious determination to get justice . . . a goal shared by Elle.

Their chance encounter at the police station leads to a surprising and inexplicable gravitation to one another, but even as the attraction grows, Elle and Calder can’t help but wonder if the unimaginable tragedy that brought them together is too painful and too complicated to sustain—especially while the shooter remains at large.

A tragic bu captivating. story

I'm sure it took Sandra Brown a great deal of "guts" to write this story. To immerse yourself so thoroughly in the gur-wrenching tragedy of losing your child takes you into an emotional journey that no one should attempt. Sandra Brown did it sensitively and with grace. Thank you.

Not my favorite

This was not my favorite book. I didn’t love the story. The narrator made it hard to follow who was speaking - his female voices were awful! However the twisted ending kept me listening to the end!

Sandra is so great with characters...

I really have enjoyed Sandra's talent for story telling and making her characters come alive in the books I've read for 20 yrs now

Hard to listen to

I enjoyed the layers of the story that the author presented. I wished they would have use a different narrator

Sandra is back!

I was disappointed in the last book, but this one was pretty great. Kyf Brewer is not my favorite narrator (his women's voices are awful), but he did a mostly good job with this.

LOVE Sandra Brown but not this book

I have always loved Sandra Brown novels. They’re all pretty similar in set-up - girl and guy are thrown together in some challenging circumstance, fall in lust/love, solve the problem, live happily ever after. I always finish a book no matter how much I dislike it because I want to know how it ends. However, I don’t think I can finish this book.

The “fall in lust/love” scenario comes out of nowhere. We barely know these characters, and they are dealing with a horrific situation, and suddenly they’re in bed. The guy just suddenly falls in lust/love with no logical explanation except that he is an insensitive horn-dog with no control over himself. The girl supposedly lost something more precious to her than anything else in the world, yet she goes about her life like nothing happened and spends her time thinking about the guy. It is rushed and doesn’t make sense given what’s happening in their lives.

Sandra Brown is always good at writing the mystery villain story, and this was true up to the point that I quit reading. I WANT to know who it is and why they did it and what they do next. If I can get past the possibly-fatal flaw of disliking/not caring about the main characters, I might finish reading. If I do, I will update this review.
