#1 New York Times bestselling author Sandra Brown delivers a riveting thriller where a conflict of conscience for a former football star and an ambitious state prosecutor swiftly intensifies into a fight for their lives.

Former Super Bowl MVP quarterback Zach Bridger hasn’t seen his ex-wife, Rebecca Pratt, for some time—not since their volatile marriage imploded—so he’s shocked to receive a life-altering call about her. Rebecca has been placed on life support after a violent assault, and he—despite their divorce—has medical power-of-attorney. Zach is asked to make an impossible choice: keep her on life support or take her off of it. Buckling under the weight of the responsibility and the glare of public scrutiny, Zach ultimately walks away, letting Rebecca's parents have the final say.

Four years later, Rebecca's attacker, Eban—the scion of a wealthy family in Atlanta—gets an early release from prison. The ludicrous miscarriage of justice reeks of favoritism, and Kate Lennon, a brilliant state prosecutor, is determined to put him back behind bars. Rebecca’s parents have kept her alive all these years, but if her condition were to change—if she were to die—Eban could be retried on a new charge: murder.

It isn’t lost on Zach that in order for Eban to be charged with Rebecca’s murder, Zach must actually be the one to kill her. He rejects Kate’s legal standpoint but can’t resist their ill-timed attraction to each other. Eban, having realized the jeopardy he’s in, plots to make certain that neither Zach nor Kate lives to see the death of Rebecca—and the end of his freedom.

Editorial Review

The other side of debauchery
This was certainly a trip, literally. Rebecca, party animal and ex-wife of star football player Zach Bridger, parties a little too hard one night and ends up in a coma—thanks to the cold heart and violent temper of Eban, scion of a prominent family. He serves some jail time but not enough for anyone’s satisfaction. Enter a star prosecutor who explains to Zach that there’s only one way to put this loser back behind bars—Rebecca, who’s still on life support, has to die. Through a series of turns (and trysts), confrontations, a suicide, and a cold-blooded murder, I wallowed in this thriller—I was in no rush to finish as I savored the last roller-coaster half-hour. Alas! It ends, as all good things must do. Sandra Brown sure can spin a yarn. Brava! — Yvonne D.

I hate sappy love stories that give you a blow by blow of their love making. The story was just okay.

I hadn't listened to any Sandra Brown books for some time although I had a positive vibe about her books. I admit I'd forgotten her genre is romantic thrillers and, yes, there is some steamy sex in the book. Still, it was a nice story, a fun listen. I don't know about having the protagonist be a former Super Bowl MVP but, hey, it's the author's choice and she can do what she wants.

it is what it is

It would have been better without the gratuitous sexual descriptions. Leave this to the imagination of the reader.

Story was good but…

I am actually not sure how I decided on this book but very glad I did! It was fun & I couldn't wait to get reading!

A great ride!

The book was just ok. The narrator ruined it for me. His inability to do female voices really distracted me from enjoying the book. At times I had to stop and back up to see who was talking. The male voices were fine but not extinguished enough to know who was who.

Narrator sucked!

I have read or listen to all of Sandra Brown’s books just about other than the earlier ones. This was a huge disappointment. The narration was annoying I felt like it made me dislike the female lead making her sound like a ditz and fragile woman when I felt like she should’ve been portrayed more strongly. The gruffness of the Male lead characters voiceover was way too over-the-top. No one talks like that and it was annoying throughout the book. I felt like the storyline was really lacking. There wasn’t much shock at all you pretty much knew who the villain was from the beginning and the intimate scenes were extremely corny. I did manage to finish the book but I just wasn’t impressed. The ending was probably the corny ass part of all literally the very last sentence of the book.

A bit of a let down

I finished it, but quite disappointed on all counts. Narration of main characters annoying, esp the male lead. Story predictable and villain over the top.

Meh
