Publisher's Summary

Inspired by the work of Shirley Jackson and Susan Hill and set in a crumbling country mansion, The Silent Companions is an unsettling Victorian Gothic ghost story that will send a shiver down the spine....

Newly married, newly widowed Elsie is sent to see out her pregnancy at her late husband's crumbling country estate, The Bridge. With her new servants resentful and the local villagers actively hostile, Elsie only has her husband's awkward cousin for company. Or so she thinks.

Inside her new home lies a locked room, and beyond that door lies a 200-year-old diary and a deeply unsettling painted wooden figure - a Silent Companion - that bears a striking resemblance to Elsie herself.

As Elsie's suspicions about her husband's family grow, she discovers that those around her believe a very different story - a story of just what Elsie did to end up where she is now....

Eerie and fabulous

Would you consider the audio edition of The Silent Companions to be better than the print version?

Yes, it adds to the creepy atmosphere of the book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Silent Companions?

Too many to mention

Have you listened to any of Katie Scarfe’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Excellent narrator. She made the characters come alive.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Again, too many to mention.

Any additional comments?

This is one of the best books I have read in years. It's more creepy than scary. I was kept in the edge of my seat from start to finish. I'm really fussy and don't usually leave reviews but I can wholeheartedly recommend spending a credit on this! It's one of those books you don't want to end as you know anything you listen to next won't quite measure up. A true ghost/haunted house/gothic horror type tale.

Interesting story, annoying recording

The variation of volume in the narration makes this a little irritating to listen to, but the story is good

tedious

I really struggled with this book. I found the plot dragged and the characters dull and unconvincing. I wouldn't recommend.

Poor sound quality

Really disappointed. Half way through this story I’m about to give up because I can’t hear it properly! I listen to lots of things on Audible and it’s usually fine. 😞

Couldn't switch off the last few chapters

Excellent narration created all the atmosphere. Good story with good twists and a good ending.

The best book I’ve listened too!

Such a beautifully written and narrated story. I never tired of it. Creepy but not horrific if that makes sense. Laura please write another one! I’m going to listen to it again 😀🎉🎉💕

A satisfying ghost story

I thoroughly enjoyed the writing and performance of this book. The twist on a traditional ghost story was satisfying in its familiarity, while still managing to be a little creepy.

So-so story marred by poor narrator

The narrator's voice is thin, high, reedy. Her acting ability is rather limited. The story has a slow start improves in second part. Not very original but OK overall.

Disappointed

The narrator nearly saved this book for me. The gothic story line was at first intriguing, then became, quite frankly, a bit of an boring anticlimax and I’ve stopped listening three quarters way through. Annoying because, based on some reviews, I bought the kindle version too. I will try the written word version in a few months before trying the audio again
