Publisher's summary

Set in Colonial New England, Slewfoot is a tale of magic and mystery, of triumph and terror as only dark fantasist Brom can tell it.

Connecticut, 1666.

An ancient spirit awakens in a dark wood. The wildfolk call him Father, slayer, protector.

The colonists call him Slewfoot, demon, devil.

To Abitha, a recently widowed outcast, alone and vulnerable in her pious village, he is the only one she can turn to for help.

Together, they ignite a battle between pagan and Puritan - one that threatens to destroy the entire village, leaving nothing but ashes and bloodshed in their wake.

“If it is a devil you seek, then it is a devil you shall have!”

Critic reviews

"Which is worse? The Devil of the forest or the terror of Puritan village rumors, accusations, and lies? At the crossroads of victimhood and vengeance, Abitha makes her choice - and blood follows." (Richard Kadrey, New York Times best-selling author of the Sandman Slim series)

"I loved this book. A roaring, bloody, beautiful work of pure imagination." (Andy Davidson, author of The Boatman's Daughter)

"Punctuated by moments of unanticipated levity as well as unmitigated terror, this clever and imaginative tale is not to be missed by fans of dark fantasy and historical horror." (Library Journal)

great book, but bottom of brom's selection

as a rabid fan of Brom, I went into this with my usual excitement. as I continued, the excitement tapered off.

the story of a woman living in 17th century puritanical Connecticut, attempting to carve out her path as a widow in a society ruled by God and men; its chock-full of wins and losses. you find yourself rooting for the main character during the tiny victories, and dreading the inevitable defeats due to the times. it made for an engaging read.

unfortunately, this book seems to fall into type-casr area for Brom, as it follows some of his previous stories "self-imposed tropes."
mythic monster/demon/deity attempts to find himself, aligns with human character, both find themselves through the journey. it sadly made for a predictable read through. but this is far from a slight, especially if this is the first book you're reading of his.

even though this is not my favorite book by Brom, it is far from bad. Definitely worth the credit.

good book but

Seriously we get it. It sucked being a woman in the 1600s and surprise! it still sucks for many women. Why was there such a need to build up that much of a struggle? Do we need to relive that horror over and over just for the little pay off we get? Two chapters of revenge? I was ready to sell my soul to the devil after the first chapter. additionally, there was a clear window to flip this into a vampire origin story.

I prefer Brom's other books.

I adore Brom's novels and art; however, I found this book to be very predictable, so much so that I couldn't enjoy it much. My favorite Brom novel is Lost Gods, followed by Krampus and then Child Thief. I'm obviously in the minority here.

Totally worth a read

This was a great book! My third Brom book and it did not disappoint. I love his dark serious out look on what are usually light hearted or whimsical topics. The main character was relatable and human and the other worldly creatures where interesting and cool to read about. The narrator also did a great job.

amazing

I absolutely loved this book. a perfect combination of historical fiction, witching and revenge. the narration was beautiful as well. any time I see "horror" in the genre I get nervous but this was not too gruesome; definitely had some scenes of carnage but not at all over the top. 10/10 recommend this one

Meh. Not really that great guys.

The gore fest at the end made my eyes glaze over. Kinda like watching the Saw movies or Hostel. You’ll love it if torture porn is your thing or you want a cheap thrill to read on the beach. Go elsewhere if you’re looking for substance or a comprehensive plot. This is the first “Brom” book I’ve read and will likely be the last.

Excellent Read for the Halloween season

This is the second of Brom’s novels that I have read/listened to. He has quickly become one of my favorite authors. The narration on this is excellently performed as well.

The three stooges meet Hecate

Poor writing. Inauthentic speech for its period. However, the characters held me nominally interested and the narration was excellent.

Dark buildup you end up rooting for

I really enjoyed the book. The story started really light and you think you're going to get caught up in some type of romance. The main character is sweet, flawed, and relatable. There are ups and downs that lead you to rooting for satisfyingly dark ending.

Can't wait to listen again!

This was my favourite audiobook I've listened to so far. I'm going to give Brom's other books a read and then I will definitely return to this one! Such enchanting characters, it is incredibly written and the audio performance is amazing. Highly recommend!

Another Brom Classic

What a wonderful world Brom conjures up. This time our story is set in colonial New England during the almost unbelievable period of “witchcraft“ hysteria. Slewfoot is a wonderful novel of female empowerment, tragedy, and bitterness, born of personal failings.
Guys, before you decide to throw this book aside, please give it a chance, Slewfoot isn’t a politically, correct, tome, propagating dodgy narratives, rather an excellent adventure, brewing, with action, wonderment, and emotional rollercoasters. Seriously, a 5 out of 5 audiobook offering up all of the above and wonderful narration.👍

A great folk horror

If you watched VVitch and wanted more, this is a great book for you. The characters are great, the tension is kept high, and the intriguing story takes some unexpected twists.

Full of magic and demons!

I love this book. It's a full of magic, demons, shamans and mother earths mythical creatures. It is very dark at parts. It is grim, full of horror and it is brutally honest to the gruesome past of how women were treated in the witch trials.

Great book

Narrated very well, story good, wish there was more. Hated it coming to an end. Wasn't scary but there was some suspenseful moments ***spoiler*** Wish the husband had more of a role for a bit longer but still very good.

This book is incredible.

I read the book whilst listening to the audiobook. Funnily enough I found reading it more creepy than listening to it. The atmosphere of this story is incredible and I felt creeped out, pissed off and vindicated as it went a long.

Doom, Gloom & Brilliantly Written

I didn’t know what to expect with this book, but as other reviews have stated it is an absolute masterpiece.

A enchanting, gloomy look into the past, powerful & powerless beings and the havoc of fear based beliefs & what lurks in the dark

I could go on & on and still wouldn’t be doing it justice! Do yourself a favour and read this book!

This story is a masterpiece

A book has not effected my emotions like this in a long time!
The way the story explores the evil of religion and the nature of humans is so true and captivating.
One of my new all time favourites.

My favourite type of propaganda

A great tale of the true meaning of evil and our relationship with nature. I couldn’t help but be sucked into the narrative and have to admit maybe it is better with the devil you know.
