Publisher's summary

From Janet Evanovich, number-one New York Times best-selling author of the Stephanie Plum novels, and Lee Goldberg, best-selling author and television writer for Monk, comes the first adventure in an electrifying new series featuring an FBI agent who always gets her man, and a fearless con artist who lives for the chase.

FBI Special Agent Kate O’Hare is known for her fierce dedication and discipline on the job, chasing down the world’s most wanted criminals and putting them behind bars. Her boss thinks she is tenacious and ambitious; her friends think she is tough, stubborn, and maybe even a bit obsessed. And while Kate has made quite a name for herself for the past five years the only name she’s cared about is Nicolas Fox - an international crook she wants in more ways than one.

Audacious, handsome, and dangerously charming, Nicolas Fox is a natural con man, notorious for running elaborate scams on very high-profile people. At first he did it for the money. Now he does it for the thrill. He knows that the FBI has been hot on his trail - particularly Kate O’Hare, who has been watching his every move. For Nick, there’s no greater rush than being pursued by a beautiful woman...even one who aims to lock him up. But just when it seems that Nicolas Fox has been captured for good, he pulls off his greatest con of all: He convinces the FBI to offer him a job, working side by side with Special Agent Kate O’Hare.

Problem is, teaming up to stop a corrupt investment banker who’s hiding on a private island in Indonesia is going to test O’Hare’s patience and Fox’s skill. Not to mention the skills of their ragtag team made up of flamboyant actors, wanted wheelmen, and Kate’s dad. High-speed chases, pirates, and Toblerone bars are all in a day’s work...if O’Hare and Fox don’t kill each other first.

Not your typical Evanovich

If you are expecting a Stephanie Plum type story. Don't waste your credit. I for one, really enjoyed this book. I have listened to many books by Janet but burned out on Janet's humor and had not purchased any of her books over the past several years. I bought this book with a healthy dose of hesitation but I'm glad I did. I also have listened to so many books narrated by Scott Brick & have been a tad burned out with his style as well. Well, much to my surprise, this story is well presented by Scott and the storyline entertaining.

Evanovich, no longer trite--entertaining romp

I was one of the first Evanovich fans, and adored the self-depricating Stephanie Plum. As the novels were rolled out in a dizzying pace, they got more and more trite and cartoonish, until I felt like I was listening to a farce reminiscent of "The Simpsons".

So, I fully expected to dislike this book, as I had resolved never again to waste money on her books. Was I wrong! It must be the addition of Goldberg, not to mention Scott Brick's narration, that made this an entertaining heist romp from start to finish. No over-the-top cartoonish figures, and real action. Good move, Janet!

Scott Brick as narrator? Give me a break!

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I bought this book hoping for an enjoyable listening experience. The story is good, but the choice the narrator is horrible. I've enjoyed many books read by Brick, but this is not definitely one of them.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Scott Brick excels at narrating, but not in this case. Perhaps I am spoiled by Lorelei King's performance of Evanovich's books, but Brick falls short in bringing to life Kate's personality. Listening to him I only get angry, strained vibes. Kate is half of the book and Brick is not the best with female characters. I'd much rather read the print version and get to know the real chocolate-addicted Kate!

Disapointed

Halfway thru, not sure I'll finish. Life's too short to listed to mediocre audiobooks.
I had high expectations from Janet Evanovich for something light with some laughs, this isn't it. It's light, but no laughs. Also, in my opinion, not the best reader for this material.

Loved it!!!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. I have been a fan of the plum series for years but have been pretty disappointed with the last few books. They had become same old, same old to me. I loved these new characters!!! They are fresh and funny.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved Kate's relationship with her dad. So funny.

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

Scott Brick did a great job. His performance as Kate was my favourite.

Totally Fun Romantic Ride!

I had a great time listening to this book. I like Evanovich in moderate doses - and as this book was a totally new book without all the same characters, I really enjoyed it. I also have read or listened to all of Goldberg's Mr. Monk books, so I knew this book would be good,.

And it was really good. Oh - it won't win any literary prizes for sure; it was predictable, but it was a really frivolous, fun, adventurous and humorous listen!

If you like books by Jennifer Crusie - I highly recommend The Heist by Evanovich and Goldberg. The story line is a bit far-fetched, as are some of the things that happen, but it's a total work of fiction, meant to have a bit of fun.

So - sit back and just enjoy the heist!

Not a Plum!

I know this is a new series and, as such, will develop over time but I was disappointed on many levels. First of all, it was a hard listen. Scott Brick's delivery seemed flat. There wasn't much change between characters. More of a straight "read" than performance. If the story hadn't been interesting I would have given up. As for the story, because it was such a unique storyline, it kept my interest; however, put all thoughts of Stephanie Plumb and her antics out of your mind. There is no comparison. The out loud laughter factor that I always find with Stephanie is nonexistent and Nick is no Ranger!!!!

All of that said, the book is about cons and is written with creativity. I do give the ending two stars though. It was rushed and very flat. It would be a five star series with a couple of changes. A new narrator and better endings. The narrator should be one who can infuse the characters with personalities and identities. As for the endings? Continue to write with the same imagination and creativity that got us to that spot in the first place.

Who knew a pirate attack could come in handy?

Absolutely incredible. One of the best books I have read in a long time. It was like Leverage meets White Collar with some essence of James Bond. Magnificent team of Agent O'Hare and Fox, they pulled off some incredible displays under incredibly high stakes. Who knew being attacked by pirates could come in handy?

The whole ride was a thrill, both because of the con process and the more action packed guns and grenades moments. And it wasn't all fun with felonies and firearms, I thought it was very intelligent too. Masterfully plotted (both Fox's schemes and by the authors overall).

The narration was great. Brick's female voices wavered into his male's tones occasionally, but the tones of the speakers remained identifiable. I was amused that his voice for older men, especially Jake, sounded just like James Garner. Incidentally I could picture him at 60ish playing Jake in a movie adaptation perfectly.

I can't wait to read the rest of the available books in this series!

Book 5 of this wonderful and fun series...

...will be released in 4 weeks. The title is The Pursuit. The Heist, Book 1, is extraordinary entertainment, as are all novels and novellas in the series. Scott Brick narrates brilliantly. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Good...not quite great

I enjoyed this book but I missed those "laugh out load moments I always get with Evanovich's Stephanie Plumb books.
I also was not thrilled with the narration. I just am not as happy with Scot Brick as a reader the way so many people are. I think his readings all sound the same with a certain cadence and don't portray the personalities of the protagonists like Susan Erickson or Lorelei King and many other talented readers. I hope if this is a new series they get a different reader next time.
I definitely enjoyed the story and I liked the characters quite a bit. The humor was there, but subtle. I do recommend this entertaining book, but if you are looking for a Stephanie Plumb, you won't find her here.
