Publisher's Summary

A cold case heats up, revealing a deadly conspiracy in a twisty thriller by #1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Goldberg.

A catastrophic wildfire scorches the Santa Monica Mountains, exposing the charred remains of a woman who disappeared years ago. The investigation is assigned to Eve Ronin, the youngest homicide detective in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, a position that forces her to prove herself again and again. This time, though, she has much more to prove.

Bones don’t lie, and these have a horrific story to tell. Eve tirelessly digs into the past, unearthing dark secrets that reveal nothing about the case is as it seems. With almost no one she can trust, her relentless pursuit of justice for the forgotten dead could put Eve’s own life in peril.

Eve Series Settles In

Eve Ronin is back for her second procedural in Lee Goldberg's latest series, with entry #3 due later in 2021. Lost Hills, her debut, was a slight misfire for me, the first time Goldberg didn't knock it out of my ballpark. Too much like Bosch, with the key clue, presented early on, overlooked until the end by someone who does not overlook clues.

In Bone Canyon, the wild fires that were the setting for the climax of Lost Hills have revealed human bones, reopening a cold case for Eve to solve. Still very reminiscent of a Bosch novel, but much more satisfying than the prior entry. The final reveal is too far out of left field, no way to see it coming, the opposite problem of Lost Hills telegraphing it too soon.

But that's only a minor quibble, not affecting the entirety of the various story lines. Overall, Eve has settled into her role as maverick detective, and Goldberg has settled into this series.

I read the first book in the series and enjoyed it and couldn't wait for the 2nd one. This was a very entertaining story, kept me engaged and I felt the narrator did a really good job especially handling all the different voices. I this book was worth a credit

loved this one. delightfully twisty!

Loved this one. Delightfully twisty!
Audible - well done.
Twisty plot - well crafted.
I had the "who dun it" early, but it was still delicious to watch it unfold.
I liked that this book picked up quickly from the first book and seemed like just a continuation- like in a tv series.
Typically the "sophomore" novel is not as great, but this one is better than the 1st.
I read complaints in reviews about how this LASD unit doesn't exist in real life therefore these books aren't good - To that I'd like to say, who cares! It's fiction. *eyeroll* Some people can't just enjoy something on it's merits of a well crafted story.
Get the book.
Enjoy the book.
I am certainly looking forward to the next book.

The back story... The h is working a murder case based on bones found that have been uncovered by the fire from the first book. The victim had been killed several years earlier and she discovers that a very distinctive tattoo was the only thing that she remembered. Unfortunately it points back to Police Officers and she has to investigate.

Romance or Gist: The h does have a relationship with the bone specialist.

The drama explosion... Some of the bad officers try to scare off or potentially kill the h
Did it feel Real, OK or contrived? a bit contrived
Was it OTT? Very
Was it resolved properly or rushed? Properly

Final Notes... This was a very fast-paced story and I enjoyed the bulk of the story. My hope is that the entire series doesn't just focus on bad officers. Obviously there are good officers like the h, her partner and some of the others in this story.

If you support these causes, it's for you

Political strife of the last several years has worn me out. While I'm sympathetic to certain causes, I really don't want to encounter more in the books I choose. If you like to gather more material to fan some flames, then this might be right up your alley. For me, it was a little too preachy. I look for escapism. This is reality stretched to sad extreme. Not for me.

This is so annoying! Fairy fantasy story!

Suspend all disbelief because there is no reality here. Femme bot super cop leverages her career with a ? YouTube video and not only gets the bad guy but gets a multi million dollar tv series contract out of it. The ending is so contrived I felt betrayed. I don’t like these fairytale fantasy stories. Please make them stop

Very good mystery.

While this was a suspenseful murder mystery it was also very enjoyable. It had some amusing points and the main character comes across as very personable. Will definitely read the next in the series.

Ok. Not a good as the first one.

Honestly, I struggled with the middle of this book. Maybe I had too high expectations after the first one but this wasn't quite as tense and engaging. It's a weird one because the beginning was quite good, the middle was poor and the ending was great.

I think part of the problem is this book reveals a lot of the main character's flaws and that makes it seems less of an escapist fantasy and bogs it down more in reality.

I found most of the characters ok although some were too unrealistic for me. Some of the MCs actions were a bit weird but by and large justifiable. The plot was okish.

The narration was... robotic. Moreso than in the previous book from what I remember. I did listen at 1.10x speed.
