What would have made The Darkest Hour better?

A stronger hero (and I don't mean physical strength)

Would you ever listen to anything by Maya Banks again?

    Probably not.

What aspect of Harry Berkeley’s performance would you have changed?

The only problem I had with Harry Berkeley was that it was hard to distinguish between the male characters...but that's mostly on the author.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment. I like a good series that involves military/secret missions etc. This just didn't live up to the hype.
Any additional comments?

    ***SPOILER ALERT***

First you have a former SEAL - out of action for over a year - who has been on a drinking binge since his wife died the previous year. He drifts between self rage, self pity and wallowing in the fact he and his wife were at odds before her death.

He finds out his wife is still alive and being held captive in South America and goes to his older brothers who run a covert mission firm and basically says, you help me or I will go alone...so they let this drunken, former SEAL go on a covert mission in which he gets shot (just a graze, but seems to recover from very quickly), and then proceeds to ask his wife (I swear, every 5 minutes) "Are you OK" or variations there of. Not only does he keep asking, so do all of the brothers. If I were the wife, I would have taken one of the guns and shot them for being irritating!

Both the hero and heroine don't seem to know what teamwork and partnership is because they keep withholding information from each other which just makes their issues worse.

I listened all the way through...I had to know how it ended, which by the way seemed like a let down.
"a woman reviewed this. loved it. not a guy book."

I have read this book a few times. The series is really strong all the way through book 7. Book 8 sort of makes you want to roll your eyes and vomit at the cheesiness... And book 9 did not do one of our favorite characters justice. I look for to book ten though because overall I really love the series.

    "Unexpected from this author"
If you could sum up The Darkest Hour in three words, what would they be?

    Suspenseful, gripping, unexpected

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Rachel. Her courage and struggles

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes

    Any additional comments?

I made the mistake of trying to read another novel in this series and quickly realized I was missing background needed so I went back to this first novel. I would recommend reading the series in order.

    "Great book - Great Narrator"
Would you listen to The Darkest Hour again? Why?

I would listen to this book over again. I LOVED this book, great story line, great action and the family of characters are very very likable. The narrator is also very wonderful. I only listened one other book w/ a male narrator and was very happy w/ this one. He was very appealing to listen to, he added depth to the characters. Excited for the next one.

    "Excellent Book"
What made the experience of listening to The Darkest Hour the most enjoyable?

It was greatly read by a narrator that puts emotion in to the story as it is told.

Who was your favorite character and why?

No favorite, all great. The story was very smooth and detailed.

What about Harry Berkeley’s performance did you like?

He is great, lots of emotion involved in his story telling and voices of the involved characters.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Each point made was a new experience I do not have a specific one.

    Any additional comments?

Looking forward to this whole series! I will not hear another book till I am through with this series!

    "Too Much Profanity"

I liked Maya's Highland series and wanted to give this series a try; however, I was not expecting the excessive use of the "f" word. This spoiled the book for me, and I could not finish listening. This is just a friendly warning for others like me who find excessive profanity disturbing. I gave the book only 1 star simply because of that fact. However, it is only fair to explain that I did not listen to much of the book, so I really cannot judge the overall story or preformance.
