Publisher's summary

An LAPD homicide detective must choose between justice and vengeance as he teams up with the FBI in the first novel of the "thrilling" Harry Bosch series (New York Times Book Review).

For maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal...because the murdered man was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who had fought side by side with him in a hellish underground war. Now Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit. Pitted against enemies inside his own department and forced to make the agonizing choice between justice and vengeance, Bosch goes on the hunt for a killer whose true face will shock him.

Impressed? Ace detective Harry Bosch is also on the case in other exciting Michael Connelly crime-fiction novels.

The Start of a long tradition

Have listened to many Bosch books and watched the TV series. i love Bosch and MC writing style. Interesting note: I re watched Steve McQueen in Bullitt last week and was drawn to the similarity in the attitude and detective approaches by Bulitt and Bosch.
I also love MC's vivid descriptions and attention to detail his books. This was especially true with Chapters 25 & 26 of this adventure. MC's ability to make a reader or listener (in my case) visualize what is occurring in the tunnel. As the years have progressed a person can see, hear and read how MC's writing skills have grown and developed. Truly a gift for all of us. Dick Hill does a good job as the narrator also. Looking forward to hearing Black Ice. jeff lantz

Unexpectedly good read

When I started this, it seemed a run of the mill story about a 'rogue" detective. It gradually developed into much more than this. Good characterisation and a reasonable (if predictable) plot kept my interest. Would probably read more of the series.

Bosch Book 1

Enjoyed this book. Smoking in this book is a little dated. I enjoyed the story and characters.

Great start to the series

I started with the Lincoln lawyer series which mentions Harry Bosch which mostly very good books by this author.

Nice to see the patterns and still be surprised.

The narrator is bad if not horrible...but the content makes it easy to overlook him.

I am a big fan of Connelly

The character voices are not the best. But, once you get caught up in the storyline it all falls into some harmony. The story itself is energetic, unpredictable, and surprise endings. I really love this author's stories.

I liked it

Not my favorite Michael Connelly work but I have no regrets about both buying it and listening to it. It kept me entertained for a few evenings and weekend. I'd recommend.

If you have the time...

I like Connelly, and have listened to several of the Harry Bosch books, but this one just seemed long to me. Good story, but I think it could have used more editing.

A first-rate mystery - full of shadows.

I really like Harry Bosch and it isn't because he is a likable character. I like him, I think, because of his hard nature. He is a man who seems to live with a lot of pain and much of that comes from the time he served as a tunnel rat in Vietnam. Luckily, the plot of this novel plays off of that pain. It takes his past and uses it to draw out Harry's story and allow him to develop into a complex and interesting detective. I really liked the use of his memories to aid him in solving the current crime. I liked even more the use of his past to develop my emotions as a reader.

Dick Hill never fails. If I have ever given him less than 5 stars then I must have not been thinking well at the time. He takes the characters and brings them to life with subtlety. He is absolutely one of my top five favorite narrators.
