Every job is a little mystery, and he has yet to encounter a lock he can't break or a box he can't crack. Story
Two women have gone missing, and LAPD detective Harry Bosch has a strong suspicion that an avid fisherman named Denninger is the culprit. Bosch needs something stronger than a suspicion to bring Denninger in, but all he has are a handful of photos - prior mug shots and pictures of Denninger posing with his prize fish. It's not much to go on, and Bosch is running out of time, which is why he calls in FBI agent Rachel Walling. What she sees in these photos could blow his case wide open.

LAPD Detective Harry Bosch tackles three tough cases that span a legendary career in this never-before-collected trio of stories. Before he became a novelist, Michael Connelly was a crime reporter, covering the detectives who worked the homicide beat in Florida and Los Angeles. In vivid, hard-hitting articles, Connelly leads the reader past the yellow police tape as he follows the investigators, the victims, their families and friends, and, of course, the killers, to tell the real stories of murder and its aftermath.

Story
An anonymous tip puts Bosch on a case that has remained unsolved for decades, the vicious stabbing of a teenage boy whose body was found in an abandoned Old Hollywood restaurant. Cold cases are often the toughest: With no body, no murder scene, and no fingerprints, Bosch nevertheless gets lucky when DNA evidence from the murder weapon points to a known killer. But the DA insists that science alone is not enough - he needs the case to be bulletproof before he'll take it to court.

Story
In a case that spans 20 years, Harry Bosch links the bullet from a recent crime to a file from 1992, the killing of a young female photographer during the L.A. riots. Harry originally investigated the murder, but it was then handed off to the Riot Crimes Task Force and never solved. Now Bosch's ballistics match indicates that her death was not random violence, but something more personal, and connected to a deeper intrigue. Like an investigator combing through the wreckage after a plane crash, Bosch searches for the "black box", the one piece of evidence that will pull the case together.

In Los Angeles in 1988, a 16-year-old girl disappeared from her home and was later found dead of a gunshot wound to the chest. The death appeared at first to be a suicide, but some of the evidence contradicted that scenario, and detectives came to believe this was in fact a murder. Publisher's Summary
Three never-before-collected short stories from number-one New York Times best-selling author Michael Connelly.
In "Cahoots", a backroom poker game turns deadly when a cheater is exposed. In "Mulholland Dive", a man who deciphers the hidden codes of accident scenes investigates a fatality off L.A.'s most fabled roadway. In "Two-Bagger", an obsessed cop tails an ex-con he believes is about to carry out a contract killing.
Together these gripping, unforgettable stories show that Michael Connelly "knows the workings of the LAPD and the streets of the City of Angels like he knows his own name" (Boston Globe).
This special audio edition also features a sneak preview from Connelly’s highly anticipated next novel The Black Box, in which LAPD Detective Harry Bosch must confront the city's and his own haunted past.

One of Connelly's weaker efforts
Any additional comments?
Three short stories: cheating at an 1920s backroom poker game, a traffic crime investigator analyzes the scene of a suspicious celebrity death, and a cop tails a would-be assassin to a Dodgers game. The stories were all decent because Connelly’s a good writer but they’re lightweight and easily missed, even for fans. His short story books “Angle of Investigation” and “Suicide Run” were much better. Bechdel test: fail.

Good, but not the best
Would you try another book from Michael Connelly and/or David W. Collins?
I enjoyed these short stories. But, frankly Michael Connelly and his characters (Bosch or Haller) are at their best in complete books.
What does David W. Collins bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Good narration, but not too much to work with.
Was Mulholland Dive worth the listening time?
Yes.

Great listen
What made the experience of listening to Mulholland Dive the most enjoyable?
Dependable story line full development of characters surprise ending.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I love Harry Bosch. Wish I could meet him in person.
What does David W. Collins bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
It is easier to form mental pictures when you listen instead of read.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
There are a million stories in Los Angeles and this is one of them.

A touch of O. Henry, a lot of pure Connelly
Save for the first of these three short stories (a youthful seeming yarn), these are good, mature Connelly tales without contrivances. However, they're pricy for the book's brevity.

Not your usual Connelly - and a pity for it!
I did not warm to this read at all! A true Connelly fan, I was disappointed by the lack of speed and found it difficult to finish the story, something that rarely happens to me. I'd say you would be better off with Suicide Run if you're looking for short stories.
