Really Enjoyable Listen

I had completely the opposite experience with this book than did the previous reviewer. I really enjoyed it. I have read the other two books in the series so knew that I like the author but am always hesitant to get the audio version of an author I like because of the narrator. To me, the narrator is just as important as the author, if not more so, having had a few bad experiences of terrible narrators totally ruining favourite books.

I really enjoyed story and narrator here. I figured out quite early on who was responsible for the kidnapping but I enjoyed letting the story play out to confirm my suspicions and to understand the motive. Which leads me to one criticism - the motives for the kidnapping weren't very convincing. It seemed like the villain went to a huge amount of evil-doing for such a weak motive.

The narrator was good, with some good voice differentiation and pacing. I am definitely going to get the other two books on audio.

This writer is not for me!

The one star I give in this review is for the idea; a private company comprised of individuals who have suffered their own losses, who work to rescue the loved ones of others. The idea had a lot of potential, none of which was realized in this book.

I don't like a story when the author outlines chapter and verse, over and over again, what is going on in the various characters' heads, especially when it is always the same basic emotions and reactions to the situation. The dialogue and the narrative should inform me, I don't need to be spoon fed - over and over.

The book moves really slowly. Especially the sex scenes. If you like to hear about "his hard length" and her "big mounds" , you will, over and over again the same sex plays out- awesome, perhaps in another book, not in this story because the author is feeding every detail to you it's very ho hum, can-we-move-on.

I originally picked this book because I listened to "Shadow Tag" by Louise Erdrich, read by this reader, and loved her so much I immediately wanted to listen to her reading again. So disappointing, and I am reminded that story is primary. There's no way to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse...
