One woman’s reappearance throws her family into turmoil, exposing dark secrets and the hidden, often devastating truth of family relationships.

Kate Bennett vanished from a parking lot eleven years ago, leaving behind her husband and young daughter. When she shows up at a Montana gas station, clutching an infant and screaming for help, investigators believe she may have been abducted by a cult.

Kate’s return flips her family’s world upside down—her husband is remarried, and her daughter barely remembers her. Kate herself doesn’t look or act like she did before.

While the family tries to help Kate reintegrate into society, they discover truths they’ve been hiding from each other about their own relationships. But they aren’t the only ones with secrets. As the family unravels what happened to Kate, a series of shocking revelations shows that Kate’s return is more sinister than any of them could have imagined.

I enjoyed the book. It had a lot of twists, but I wouldn’t say it was a “thriller”, at least not until the end. It was more of a mystery and family drama. The end picked up speed, though. The narration was pretty good, except one of the female narrators had very unnatural sounding “men’s “ voices.
I’m not sure why Audible keeps picking daily deals that are completely free to members of Kindle unlimited, but I guess it has saved me money... The audio version of this book is also free with kindle unlimited.

This book began with such a promising premise. What if the love of your life, who you believed long dead, returned, and you were married again? Should you try to rebuild your first relationship? Especially if your first spouse was taken against their will. How should the second spouse behave? Are you still the same people you were so many years ago? I thought those would be interesting ideas to explore, but then the book turned more into a story about a cult, mental illness, and implausible turns. It was entertaining, but, in the end, disappointing.

I really enjoyed the story. Go for the read, and the audiobook if you can deal with the narrators. Honestly, I’ve gotten in a really bad habit of listening to British audiobooks almost exclusively because some of these American voices are just awful to me. The clip from this one wasn’t terrible and the story sounded interesting so I went for it. I didn’t know I had the flu during the 10-hour workday I listened to this audiobook and the narration was the most painful part of my day. I’m sorry, but I hated all the narrators. Meredith was the least terrible, but they all enunciated things so strangely. Some of the other characters they voiced were good, actually, but the three main character voices drove me crazy, one in particular. SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD!!! .......... During time away, when everything was supposed to be shiny and wonderful, the narrator turned her voice up at the end of sentences so that she sounded skeptical. I get the story aspect, but if that was intentional, it took away from the character experience. And chest and breast sounding like “chast” and “brast” was painful and that kind of thing happened repeatedly, from all three narrators. Maybe people sound like that, I don’t know, but I’ll have a hard time listening again.

Story, yes. Narration, no. Spoilers.

Lucinda Berry writes the most interesting, gripping, addictive stories.

Loved the three different perspectives. The narration was incredible. The narrator playing Abby should get an award for that performance.

Well done, all!

Wow!! Lucinda Berry does it again!
