Publisher's summary

"Be prepared to stay up all night...."

Laurel Snow wouldn't call hunting a serial killer a vacation, but with a pile of dead bodies unearthed near her Genesis Valley, Washington, hometown, she'll take what she can get. Yet something about this case stirs her in unexpected ways. Like the startling connection she feels to Dr. Abigail Caine, a fiercely intelligent witness with a disturbing knack for making Laurel feel like she has something on her. Then there's Laurel's attraction to Huck Rivers, the fish and wildlife officer guiding her to the crime scene—and into the wilderness....

A former soldier and a trained sniper, Huck seems to have his own secrets, not least of which are his whereabouts the night yet another woman disappears. And when the body is dumped where Laurel can't help but find it, she knows this cat-and-mouse game is personal....

Once in the heart of darkness with Huck, Laurel must negotiate her conflicting feelings for him, her complex rapport with Abigail—and her mission to find a serial killer among a growing list of suspects and a danger that's far too close to home. So close in fact, Laurel fears she will never find her way back to the woman she once was....

🌻Something was off!🌻

🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻V from Kansas🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻

I have loved this author for years and I have devoured everything she has released, on audible. I loved her paranormal series but, I also have loved every book in the Albertini Files.

With that being said, this book fell a bit short
Of my expectations. I’ve tried to figure out what element caused the issue and I have not been completely sure. The story line was fine, overall, and I mostly liked the characters, therefore, I’ve decided that the narration was the weak link.

Amy Landon performed the voices, alright, however she did not bring the story , to life; she just read it. Does that make sense?

I really hope the author will consider having a true duet narration team, for the rest of the series, otherwise, this will be the last book, of this series, I’ll be purchasing.

Fun read

I have really enjoyed the Rebecca Zanetti books I have listened to. She has interesting characters and a quick pace. She doesn’t write deep literature, but entertaining and enjoyable reads with characters that are engaging. This title is no different, and I will continue with this series.

I do wish her catalogue wasn’t so full of paranormal stories, because it’s not a genre I enjoy. This story is not in that genre. This is a romantic suspense, but the story is more about solving the crime than the romance. Or perhaps it’s just that it’s a balance I prefer to many books in the genre. For those who are interested - some sex, but not kinky.

Commenting on the narration makes me a bit sad. Amy Landon is an excellent narrator in most ways. She has a nice tone, enunciates well, doesn’t mispronounce words, shows appropriate (not overdone) emotion and makes it easy to differentiate characters. The only issue I have is with some of her male voices. They just don’t sound male. I think the voice of the male lead, Huck, is the worst. Like a said, makes me sad.

solid 4.5 just wish it was longer

I loved the story, could have used a little more thrill but really solid story and character development. the narrator had a good variation of voices but she read the book like a terrible actor which kind of killed all of her appeal for me.

Quite engaging!

I was pleasantly surprised after purchasing this audio book based on a review by a friend. I was looking for something new to listen to and I'm so glad I ran across this. The character development was fantastic, the storyline was engaging and intriguing, and I didn't get annoyed with the depiction of law enforcement investigation as I often do when someone doesn't do their research on true police procedure. I'm currently engrossed in the second book of the series and very much enjoying it as well.

Harlequin Romance with a bit of police procedural

This was my first book from this author, and I thought it would be a police procedural with a little bit of romance mixed in, But when the romance started, things just got super silly. I like romance. I’m a sucker for a good Hallmark movie, but the book’s cheesiness was truly unbearable. In one scene, the rugged fish and wildlife officer is talking to his boss about their harrowing day finding a dead body in the snow, yet all he can think about is running his fingers through the female FBI agent’s hair. The female FBI agent who, by the way, is asleep, recuperating on his couch after almost freezing to death hiking out to find the dead body. And the dialogue is so cringe worthy at times. The female FBI agent tells a sort of hostile witness/suspect who she’s only met twice “ if you want to play smart girl chess with me…”. Smart girl chess? It’s a shame that the story devolved into cheesy romance and cringey dialogue, because the parts actually about the serial killer weren’t bad. Unfortunately there was too much of the other stuff to make the story enjoyable or even remotely believable.

ROMANCE NOVEL

Clearly a romance novel and more than moderately annoyingly narrated. Recommend alternatives (any) for those who are looking for actual psychological suspense

Just ok

The narrator was not great. It was too robotic and she did not bring the story to life. Seems like it could be a great read but it was whatever as an audiobook.

Great book!!!

I usually have an idea who the bad guy or woman could be when reading this type of story. It was fun to keep changing my suspects throughout and still not have a clue near the end.

Loved this!!!

What a great read! It's a thriller/suspense that looks like it will be a continued series. The case is solved, but the relations of the main characters are not.

The heroine is my absolute favorite. She was fascinating and I loved how she reacted to a lot of the situations in this, especially her reactions to the hero. She's a child prodigy that has become an FBI agent profiler. You could say her personality is unique. Some would say she was strange but what makes her strange in others eyes is that she doesn't let her emotions dictate her reactions. She thinks very logically and sees more into people's words instead of taking personal insult. She's also very upfront with people, no game playing or hinting. She was just a refreshing character to read about.

The hero is a bit harder to connect too. He's big, gruff and closed off. He really doesn't want to be around people to the point of being rude, and yet he is basically a hero. His work is saving people and you can tell he truly cares, he just wants to be left alone. He is also upfront with people but like I sad in more of a rude way. I can already see that the heroine is softening him just because she reacts so differently to people than others. I think that's going to make him open up more.

I think that because of the way the hero/heroine are, the romance in this series is going to be more of a slow burn. Now usually I want more with a couple, but the suspenseful plot was pretty exciting to read on its own that any romance we got felt like a bonus. There is also some pretty interesting side characters that I'm really looking forward to what's going to come next. Great read!!
