When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in.

Publisher's summary
Its cool gulf breezes lured him from a life of danger. Its dark undercurrents threatened to destroy him. After 10 years of living life on the edge, it was hard for Doc Ford to get that addiction to danger out of his system. But spending each day watching the sun melt into Dinkins Bay and the moon rise over the mangrove trees, cooking dinner for his beautiful neighbor, and dispensing advice to the locals over a cold beer lulled him into letting his guard down.
Then Rafe Hollins appeared. How could he refuse his old friend's request---even if it would put him back on the firing line? Even if it would change forever the life he'd built here on Sanibel Island?

Story
It's been said that all great literature boils down to one of two stories—a man takes a journey, or a stranger comes to town. While mystery writers have been successfully using both approaches for generations, there's something undeniably alluring in the nature of a stranger: the uninvited guest, the unacquainted neighbor, the fish out of water. In the newest collection of stories by the Mystery Writers of America, each author weaves a fresh tale surrounding the eerie feeling that comes when a stranger enters our midst, featuring stories by prolific mystery writers.

Known in his new identity only as the Kid, and on probation after doing time for a liaison with an underage girl, he is shackled to a GPS monitoring device and forbidden to live within 2,500 feet of anywhere children might gather. REALISTIC AND GREAT CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
This could be a true story. It is an exciting one. The way the author paints with his words, the reader is left with a wonderful, dramatic, exciting image, and a thirst for what will happen next. Great read.

Not his best work
What made the experience of listening to Sanibel Flats the most enjoyable?
Okay, so I am an admitted Doc Ford fanantic. I started reading his books a couple of years ago at the library and kind of read them out of order. The first books in the series I never had a chance to read. So this book was good....But the narrator that does this book is not the caliber of the narrator of the more recent books. The story was good, but I ache for the more mature and seasoned writing style he shows in his later books. Still I don't regret getting the book, I wish he would churn out more books!
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The most interesting aspect of the book was seeing Doc Ford in love with the woman in Masagua. I've met people like Doc Ford, who had a heart broken and never was able to feel this way again. The least interesting was the reappearance of Doc's childhood friend...Raif I think. That part of the book was predictable and inconsequential to the story.

I love to read books that are set in the same area I am traveling, so during a recent trip to Tampa my search turned up the Doc Ford series. I went back and found the first in the series and was not disappointed! I am downloading the second in the series today and am excited to listen to them all.

Liked story-not performance!
Dick Hill's performance Is way too over the top. Whiney (is this a word) sub-characters & ersatz Spanish accents just wear you out after a very short time. It seems that Hill's performance is more important than the plot and thus overshadows the story. I think I will avoid him in the future!

A decent modern Who Done It
I normally prefer period murder mysteries, such as Agatha Christie, but this was a decent modern story. After visiting Sanibel Island and eating at Doc Ford's restaurant, I decided I should give this series a whirl. Normally don't prefer male authors, especially if there's romance involved, but he addressed it so-so (not too graphic and gross), although I wouldn't want to be listening (to those parts) aloud. The main character is likable, so I may continue on with the series. The romance part was minimal, and he stayed on track with the murder mystery. There was some Indiana Jones type, archaeological mystery to it, so that made it interesting.
