Publisher's summary

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Carl Hiaasen's best-selling novels are funny and sardonic. Hilarious postcards of south Florida, they also decry the lurid commercialism that is draining and paving the tropical landscape.

Tourist season is swinging into high gear in Miami. So are the activities of a bizarre terrorist group determined to keep the hapless "snowbirds" away. Armed with bombs, weed, and jumbled credos, they move toward their grand target, the Orange Bowl Parade, with plans to bring Miami and its tourist trade to a halt.

The cast, which includes a deranged journalist, a visionary ex-jock, and a lovesick detective, is just the kind of company Carl Hiaasen's fans love to keep. Narrator George Wilson's performance lures each quirky character out into the full light of the Florida sun. With over half a million copies in print, this is one of Hiaasen's most popular works.

Critic reviews

"Reading a Hiaasen book is always a high-speed boat ride where laughter can turn to horror and disaster at any moment. Hearing the story aloud adds a dose of realism and sensation....Wilson's narration is perfectly timed, laid-back, and salty." (AudioFile)

CAUTION: BELLY ACHING LAUGHTER IMMINENT!

HYSTERICAL! Hiassen's satire is TRULY a work of art!

An author is at his/her best when they write based on their own experiences, thoughts, and beliefs. Hiassen does this with a finesse only someone as talented as he is can.

Like a great chef who knows that putting the exact pinch of spice in his broth keeps customers returning and that not getting it "just so" can make or break his business.

Hiassen seemingly tackles his craft with the same wizardry while crafting his next best seller... He masterfully expands on real-life concerns/happenings and puts just the right amount of satirical twist throughout the novel ( not over or underdone ) leaving (us) readers hungering for his next masterpiece. I've read (listened to) a lot of his novels and am never satiated.

Hiassen understands human nature, and this is what makes his brand of writing classical! It will be popular, and bring out numerous belly laughs for generations to come!

George Wilson brings a gifted voice and individuality to multiple characters throughout the story with undeniable talent.

Not his best

I listened to two other books by this author - Stormy Weather and Skinny Dip and thought they were excellent. This one was not nearly as good. Too "preachy" and too violent for my taste. The idea of making a hero of an insane guy who kills people - gruesomely - to make a point about what tourists are doing to Florida was more than a bit over the top. I'm willing to try Carl Hiasson again but hope his next book has less preaching, less violence and more good storytelling - like the first two.

Great Book

Tourist Season was so great. I have loved all of his books but this one was really really good. I could not wait to get back into the car to hear the rest of the CD. I love to laugh and this one had me laughing out loud several times. A 16 hour trip to FL. went by like a snap!

Hard to swallow

Listened to half of it. The meaningless and brutal killings, and the unlikely development of the story line and some of the characters, made it hard to enjoy.

You have to try it and see

If you've never tried Hiaasen before, give him a shot and decide for yourself. If you like it, you can listen to them all without too much trouble, if you don't, it's your loss. Lots of fun for those who like his style.
