Publisher's summary

The body was positioned so that the train would neatly obliterate its head and hands. Dressed in a homeless man's clothes with empty pockets, it might easily be passed off as an unfortunate John Doe. But Joe Gunther has a knack for knowing when things don't quite add up, and the math in this case is all kinds of wrong.

A toxic waste dumping scheme, a stabbing, and a whole lot of state politics quickly complicate matters further. If Occam's razor were applied to Gunther's caseload, how many incisions would it make?

Loved it!

Not full of suspense and a thriller but a good story and if you’ve gotten to know the characters from other books it’s a good link to them.

New fan of Archer Mayor

Longtime fan of detective stories, mysteries and thrillers. I’m delighted that I’ve found a new author and narrator to thoroughly enjoy. Mayor’s knack for blending an engaging storyline and details of the locale. Funny, a few days ago my six year old grandson and I were looking at pictures of fall in Vermont. Guess I was destined to connect with this author. Always keen on a good narrator and Taylorson does not disappoint. A bad one can make even a great story a misery. Listening to a sample doesn’t always help. Victor Slezak who does lots of Sandra Brown is my favorite and Taylorson is on par.

This series has a way of keeping you hooked

Like all series this one has its slow periods. This book isn’t one of them and is better than the previous couple. I think acts as a bridge to a new beginning for the whole cast.

Joe’s back

An interesting political twist to the Joe Gunther saga. The story meanders a bit but is very engaging—recommend.

Realistic not overly complicated

I’m enjoying the fact it takes place in Vermont. Easy to listen, and the plot was a little surprising. Realistic, didn’t complicate it with factual details not relevant to the plot. This was my 2nd book and will continue listening to more.

I’d read a classified ad if Archer Mayor & Tom Taylorson were involved!

I’ve listened to 6 Mayor books & already chosen the 7th! I hate when someone calls or enters the room with an interruption, or when I’m tired and fall asleep and have to retrace my steps the next morning. Mayor is my kind of author who writes my kind of books!

Joe Gunther Bk 10

I was new to Joe Gunther mysteries //Archer Mayor and began listening with book 1. I was captivated by the character building of all the individuals in the series. I almost feel like I know each of their doppelgangers in my own life. As I was saying I began with book 1 and became so entrenched in the Joe Gunther mysteries I binged listened to all 32 books with fascination, escape, and enjoyment. I love the less than perfect characters, the thought processes each character manipulates and how each struggle with mental demons (some more than others) that make them real and come to life. I am also really impressed that not one of Mr Mayor’s stories (of all 32 books) repeat themselves in story line which is a impressive feat. My only disappointment is the next book isn’t out until Sept 2022.

fabulous read

I just love the intrigue and characters. Great story, great series that builds on itself with every book.

Goodbye Gail, please!

Well, Gail continues to be nasty and angry and rude, but Joe keeps making excuses and bowing to her “superior wisdom.” How many times throughout the novel do we hear him saying, “of course Gail was right.” It makes me wonder if the author is as blind to her lack of charm as Joe is. Again, the narrator, who is absolutely excellent, and every other way, makes strange pronunciation choices. He needs to look up the rules for creating the possessive form. It’s awkward sounding when he adds ‘s to bound ending in s. He also added ES to a couple of nouns when a simple S would have been appropriate. Other than that, it was good. Tight writing, and God I learned a lot. And I live in Vermont, and I was a reporter in Vermont, sometimes covering the State House. And I still learned a lot. Just get rid of girl, please. Find him a nice woman, so we don’t have to listen to her nastiness and his thinking she’s doing him a favor. Yuck.
